So my thoughts on the nods...
Song:
Even the two I didn't vote for were just outside my ballot.
Score: Pretty good. I knew that
Ponyo wouldn't make it, but every time Hisaishi gets snubbed my heart breaks. And he deserved to get in for
Departures too. Can't complain about what made it though.
Sound editing: Excellent nods.
Sound mixing: Ditto.
Film editing: Meh.
Love Exposure got snubbed so hard.
Choreography: I'm missing the Asian films, but the others are... alright. I don't think any choreography this year is especially great from what I've seen.
Makeup:
4 for 5 from my ballot, and that's because I forgot about
Synecdoche.
Costuming:
No complaints here, although I'd replace one of the historical movies with
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day because it's a crime that film was totally snubbed.
Production design:
Cinematography:
Shame about
Wendy and Lucy though.
Ensemble: Not big on
Doubt or
TDK, but the others are great.
Adapted screenplay: Ew. The lack of
Wendy and Lucy hurts really bad. But all adapted screenplays from this year are pretty shit anyway, so no matter what got in I'd think it was a crap lineup.
Original screenplay: All over the place. Some excellent stuff, some not so excellent, but mostly solid. It hurts not seeing
Lorna's Silence here, but I'm the only fan anyway, so I knew it was a pipe dream.
Supporting actress: Terrible lineup, but godawful category. Elsa Zylberstein outshone Kristin Scott Thomas and should rightfully take her place in this group, and Amy Adams deserved something for
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. McDormand should be here for
Burn After reading, but I frauded her into leading to go with the flow... and she missed there too.
Supporting actor: Five of my seven. But my #1 (Jeremie Renier in
Lorna's Silence) missed out, and that would have made this pretty much perfect. Michael Shannon just missed my ballot, so good for him.
Actress: Where are my
foreign language international girls? Arta Dobroshi (
Lorna's Silence), Maria Heiskanen (
Everlasting Moments) and Lina Leandersson (
Let the Right One In) were all on my ballot, and all got shut out. McDormand getting shut out for both
Burn After Reading and
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day is painful too. Instead, we have Streep and Winslet and... Hawkins. *shudder* Well, we have Michelle Williams and KST at least. That's something.
Actor: No Hedebrant? No Perlman? No Sheen/Langella? No Ejiofor? I like the lineup, honestly. Just giving shout outs to my boys. Especially Hedebrant. Where the hell is Kare Hedebrant.
Director: We got Stanton, but the minimalist beauty of Reichardt and Dardenne x2 doesn't work for y'all I guess. Well, them's the breaks. Unfortunately, we also have Kaufman and Spielmann, so fuck you. Nice to see
Let the Right One In make it.
Picture: Same lineup, same thoughts.
