Yes fucking please.
Sticking with my prediction that this wins Picture, Director, Actor and Supporting Actress. Also I'm starting to side with pacinoyes here, in that I think Kodi is the films best shot in Supporting Actor.

Wait, so Netflix isn't doing the same day release thing anymore?

Wait, so Netflix isn't doing the same day release thing anymore? Not this year, no, see the DLU thread - 2 weeks earlier in theaters and 12/24 on Netflix

My gut is saying it's our Picture and Actor frontrunner (sight unseen, but on paper looking at the material and the festival projection), but I think Director goes to the huge tech contender of the year (as I've stated elsewhere, I feel like the DGA eligibility issue isn't going to hurt Villeneuve in the long run), and I think the Academy's really in a spread-the-love mood these days. Campion is definitely in my #2 slot for Best Director at the moment, though, as I can see her building a narrative of her own. But I'm just feeling a split this year. I'm really glad to see them advertising Kodi Smit-McPhee, too.

Honestly, I could see a split being something like Belfast/Campion. Interestingly, we didn't actually have a split the last two years.

That little trailer shows something we often forget in the overstuffed, blow you away world we live in.........there's very few tools that a filmmaker can use that can do as much the way silence or quiet can.... The Cumberbatch scenes here are in keeping with the written tone of the book which is a huge sigh of relief to me: he's not just "mean" or a "bad guy" but he's also an incomplete person - where he laughs at things (repeatedly) that require a normal depth of compassion and empathy (teasing Kodi here in comparison to the horses who are instinctual, not intellectual which he sees as "plotting"..........and teasing Kodi about his "manliness" which he has a whole philosophy on....... That was a superb first look

Honestly, I could see a split being something like Belfast/Campion. Interestingly, we didn't actually have a split the last two years. It doesn't really surprise me that there weren't splits the last two years, as Bong and Zhao are auteurs (which obviously appeals to the Director's branch) and their films were so dominant with critical acclaim. Nomadland usurped so much of the oxygen last year in particular and nothing could put up much of a fight against it. I could definitely see Campion benefiting as well from a split like what you describe, but I dunno, I just feel Villeneuve has been kind of the face of the theater-versus-streaming discussion and I think a lot of the industry empathizes with him, and I feel like there may be a lot of support on that front. DGA denying him outright because of a ridiculous by-law might also prickle a lot of people's hackles as well, so I don't think it'll hurt him too much as long as he can actually build critical momentum. But I feel like sight unseen, the film's a strong contender for most of the techs, and I can see a Cuaron 1.0-esque path for him off of that. But we'll see.

Regarding Actor, i think that despite the hype from Film Twitter and critics, it will be like 2019, so:
Cumberbatch= Driver (The critics favorite)
Smith=Phoenix (or Pitt)= (The AMPAS favorite, the veteran, a once gigantic movie star who's been around for decades, and now is perceived as overdue of accolades and sweeps the televised awards).

Smith is in no way seen as 'overdue' the way Phoenix or Pitt were. He's had so many critical and commercial flops in the last decade or so, and his last nom was 15 years ago. I don't think the Academy are clamouring to award someone like that, just because he's a fun movie star. The problem Smith is going to have is that his film won't be anywhere near as strong, and if we look at the precursors, BAFTA has been a very good indicator lately and Cumberbatch has that virtually on lock. Smith probably could have won the Globe, but we don't know if that is even happening this year.

Phoenix and Pitt were in movies with strong directorial ambitions and elicited passion from critics and audiences. Nothing about King Richard from its pedigree or what we've seen indicates it will be any stronger than The Pursuit of Happyness.

What an excellent teaser. This suddenly really jump to the top of my most anticipated list after being pretty ambivalent towards it. Cumberbatch (whom I'm not really a fan of and feared would be a bit miscast) looks fantastic and so does everyone. This looks to be a major contender in most categories. Definitely going to make it a priority to read the book too.

Because considering the fall festival run it's having, it has a good enough release date to make a big awards impact.
