Purely hypothetical, obviously.

Michelle Williams mainly because I think she would have taken over the due narrative Viola had of the supporting contenders and would have had an Affleck/Ali like critic sweep. She managed the big ones and even a chunk of the mid tier ones even with Davis in the race.
I could see BAFTA possibly going with Harris as she won the London Critics award and is a Brit, but Williams likely would've taken everything else.

Michelle Williams would have the overdue narrative and win.

Though personally I think it wouldn't have been deserved (her role is way too small), definitely Williams.

Michelle Williams, I'd say, since she was on her fourth nomination.

Michelle Williams, only due to the fact that she would have won the majority of the critics awards, so at the point would have become the presumed front-runner, and I don't think Naomie Harris's performance was strong enough to over-take her. Would have been an entirely different matter if Janelle Monae were nominated - I might even want to argue for whoever took the 5th nomination.

Michelle Williams would have quite easily taken it - her big scene is devastating, and plus she had the overdue narrative

Williams would've had the sweep Davis had.

Williams winning would have been gross. I found her performance somehow heavy-handed upon rewatch, it didn't really work for me. And no way she's overdue. On the other hand, Naomi Harris was stunning, she would have made a fine winner, and it would have been another (deserved) award for Moonlight.

It would have been a toss up between Harris and Williams, but I think Williams would have prevailed in the end, with the massive campaign Amazon mounted for the film and her overdue narrative.

I am not sure who would have won. But I would have voted for Kidman personally.

Agreed. I am not sure why they didn't put up Spencer and Kidman. Personally, I thought Kidman gave a great, great performance in such a small role. I absolutely loved the unspoken love between Kidman and Patel. it may just be wishful thinking on my part. Patel's chances were probably better than Kidman's, but her quiet and sensitive performance was breathtaking. It's one of her best performances ever, right up there with The Hours.

I wish she got more recognition. It was really beautiful and never overplayed. If Kidman failed to win for The Hours, I think her chances would have been greater here. But instead, they went with the overdue Davis. Patel's chances went up when he won the BAFTA. Now the question here is if Davis went lead, who would have scored that 5th spot. Perhaps we would have been Greta Gerwig or Janelle Monae getting in.

Just thought I'd chime in and say I saw Lion last Sunday and Nicole Kidman was incredible. I was pretty shocked there'd been no talk of her after seeing this performance. For me, the best supporting actress performances this year would be Kidman and Greta Gerwig. Kidman was heartbreaking in Lion. The fleeting moments of her and Sunny Pawar were magical. She does so much with so little. I didn't think Lion was that great, unfortunately, but she is so wonderful. And so is Greta Gerwig. I like all the supporting actress performances (Not seen Hidden Figures yet) but just saying - Kidman (& Gerwig!) - wow!

In a fair and just world, Molly Shannon would've gotten the nomination and the Oscar for Other People.
