I really adore this one for start.
Smile though your heart is aching Smile even though it's breaking When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by If you smile through your fear and sorrow Smile and maybe tomorrow You'll see the sun come shining through for you Light up your face with gladness Hide every trace of sadness Although a tear may be ever so near That's the time you must keep on trying Smile, what's the use of crying? You'll find that life is still worthwhile If you just smile That's the time you must keep on trying Smile, what's the use of crying? You'll find that life is still worthwhile If you just smile

From the bottom of your heart The relegation zone I saw this coming from the start The shake, rattle and roll The cracks in blackout blinds Cast patterns on the ceiling but you're feeling fine I thought it was dark outside I thought it was dark outside

Lyrics in the video and of course since Townes wrote them they are as great as anybody ever wrote.
"Salvation sat and crossed herself, called the devil partner"

Summoning is probably my favourite band, mostly due to their music, but their lyrics are also pretty great. Simple and beautiful, just like their music (this is from Runes Of Power):
The wind came down from mountain cold And like a tide it roared and rolled The branches groaned, the forest moaned And leaves were laid upon the mould
The wind went on from west to east All movement in the forest ceased But shrill an harsh across the marsh Its whistling voices were released
Also Primordial's Where Greater Men Have Fallen has some of the best lyrics I can think of right now:
They made you build your tomb With your own very hands And ground your kin to dust In the dark satanic mills of progress
It seems the lands of the free Are born of the cold and empty grave And the myths of liberty Bind our wrists like slaves
And you will always bury your sons Under broken barren promises And the heart of your motherland Will be ripped from her chest

I re-spawn, respawn, respawn respawn When you blow me up to the Aether I thought my hearts would last forever But then you struck me down, now I'm a regretter So maybe I re-spawn, respawn, respawn respawn And this time I'm gonna do better I wish this sword would last forever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever

There's hundreds I love, here's a few favorites -
"Watching his tale With the words he unfolds Conscience and cold? We'd never know They scream as he laughs off the dust from his eyes These words will now learn of the dreams in his mind." (The Willing Well I)
"Johnny was sitting on the fire escape, watching the kids playing down the street He called down, Hey little heroes, summer's long, but I guess it ain't very sweet around here anymore Janey sleeps in sheets damp with sweat Johnny sits up alone and watches her dream on, dream on And the sister prays for lost souls, then breaks down in the chapel after everyone's gone Jane moves over to share her pillow but opens her eyes to see Johnny up and putting his clothes on She says - those romantic young boys All they ever want to do is fight Those romantic young boys, they're callin' through the window - hey, Spanish Johnny, you want to make a little easy money tonight?" (Incident on 57th Street)
"So we all raise a standard To which the wise and honest soul may repair To which a hunter A hundred years from now, may look and despair And see with wonder The tributes we have left to rust in the park Swearing that our hair stood on end To see John Purroy Mitchel depart." (Sapokanikan)
"I sit alone in my four cornered room starin at candles.." (Mind's Playin Tricks on Me)

from the chorus of Bon Iver's "Holocene"
"... and at once I knew I was not magnificent Strayed above the highway aisle (Jagged vacance, thick with ice) I could see for miles, miles, miles"
mostly I feel like Vernon's lyrics are the quintessential example of brilliantly conveying a mood through language where meaning gives way to subjective experience. His songs are musical poetry, and that was never more true than in his self-titled album with its sweeping soundscapes. Those esoteric lyrics with that kind of instrumentation, contemplative and intimate but also sweeping and warm--it feels so right to me. His lyrics on the album sound so good with the music that you don't really care what might be hidden between those lines, but there a couple exceptions, and "Holocene" is one. This is a song I feel and understand in my bones. An ode to humanity's insignificance in a vast existence, the realization of which is at once mournful and liberating.

here's another that came to me.
Regina Spektor's "The Visit" is the most honest and touching examples of an artist grappling with the inescapability of time that I've heard, and she does this by constructing a scene of a visit between old friends and evoking a sense of nostalgia for long distant memories, with a somber recognition of passage of time that makes me feel like a piece of shit who's going to be facing a slew of regrets if I ever make it to 50. I love the song but I always get sad listening to it.
this portion appears towards the end.
"Time's best friend is fear That's how it can find us And do its greatest kindness Always to remind us That it's our only time inside This body and this mind
And somewhere in my mind Behind closed eyes, I see the past Catching every moment that went by To make it last 'til I begin again"

This song has insanely complicated, poetic lyrics and the ending is the shocking suicide implication in the last verse - so sly you might miss it entirely. What kind of Punk song used the words "delirium" and "bereft" ?....for Mattsby ....... Viced ...and fans of English Lit. I see the passionate who killed themselves with drink Or drugs or speeding cars in order not to think They must have felt like there just nothing was to do Oh why hast thou murdered those who see the most in search of a true thrill or clue
There's something wrong here where the best ones want to go Parker, Lautreamont, Monroe they held it just to throw The world away who were its grace before they left To choose to have a point of view oblivious that leaves the rest of us bereft
There I see the piercing eyes that look through all until they see their back There where any thought will think about itself and that's the only fact There a man has left just death, delerium, and drugs, or feel the lack
The air is cool today the time is drawing near My walls are white and so's my brain afloat in self-made fear A banal feeling of the sort "I ain't insane" No fate worse than to never leave yourself and it's as well the most repulsive pain
The air is cool today that whistles through my ribs My skull is full of sand that dribbles down upon my bib I call out "Baby" but her face looks like a clock Tick tock, alive, triumphant victims so surprised we can't recover from the shock
Me, I like a joke as much as anybody else but some are rough Yeah when the joke's on you though you're the joker too you've had enough Then though there is no one there, because there's nothing there, you call your bluff

It's difficult to narrow down, but I've always had an appreciation for Mew's Comforting Sounds:I don't feel alright in spite of these comforting sounds you make I don't feel alright because you make promises that you break Into your house, why don't we share our solitude? Nothing is pure anymore but solitude It's hard to make sense, feels as if I'm sensing you through a lens If someone else comes, I'll just sit here listening to the drums Previously I never called it solitude And probably you know all the dirty shows I've put on Blunted and exhausted like anyone Honestly I tried to avoid it. Honestly Back when we were kids, we would always know when to stop And now all the good kids are messing up Nobody has gained or accomplished anything.
EDIT: Pasting the lyrics here I was surprised by how brief this looks, despite it being just shy of a nine minute song. The lead singer's vocals are so haunting and the music is such a powerful companion to the words. Highly recommend listening to it.

Lots of lyrics but since it's the greatest lyrical anti-TV/race conflict/riot description/anti-war/class conflict song ever that covers a lot of ground ......5 songs in 1 Well I'm about to get upset From watchin' my TV Checkin' out the news Until my eyeballs fail to see I mean to say that every day Is just another rotten mess And when it's gonna change, my friend Is anybody's guess
So I'm watchin' and I'm waitin' Hopin' for the best Even think I'll go to prayin' Every time I hear 'em sayin' That there's no way to delay that trouble comin' every day No way to delay that trouble comin' every day
Wednesday I watched the riot I seen the cops out on the street Watched 'em throwin' rocks and stuff And chokin' in the heat Listened to reports About the whisky passin' 'round Seen the smoke and fire And the market burnin' down Watched while everybody on his street would take a turn To stomp n' smash n' bash n' crash n' slash n' bust n' burn
And I'm watchin' and I'm waitin' Hopin' for the best Even think I'll go to prayin' Every time I hear 'em sayin' That there's no way to delay that trouble comin' every day No way to delay that trouble comin' every day
Well, you can cool it, you can heat it Cause, baby, I don't need it Take your TV tube and eat it 'N all that phony stuff on sports 'N all the unconfirmed reports You know I watched that rotten box Until my head begin to hurt From checkin' out the way The newsman say they get the dirt Before the guys on channel so-and-so And further they assert That any show they'll interrupt To bring you news if it comes up They say that if the place blows up They will be the first to tell Because the boys they got downtown Are workin' hard and doin' swell And if anybody gets the news before it hits the street They say that no one blabs it faster Their coverage can't be beat And if another woman driver Gets machine-gunned from her seat They'll send some joker with a Brownie And you'll see it all complete
So I'm watchin' and I'm waitin' Hopin' for the best Even think I'll go to prayin' Every time I hear 'em sayin' That there's no way to delay That trouble comin' every day No way to delay That trouble comin' every day
Hey, you know something people? I'm not black but there's a whole lots a times I wish I could say I'm not white
Well, I seen the fires burnin' And the local people turnin' On the merchants and the shops Who used to sell their brooms and mops And every other household item Watched a mob just turn and bite 'em And they say it served 'em right Because a few of them are white And it's the same across the nation Black and white discrimination Yellin' "You can't understand me!" 'N all that other jazz they hand me In the papers and TV And all that mass stupidity That seems to grow more every day Each time you hear some nitwit say He wants to go and do you in Cause the color of your skin Just don't appeal to him (No matter if it's black or white) Because he's out for blood tonight
You know we got to sit around at home And watch this thing begin But I bet there won't be many Live to see it really end Cause a fire in the street Ain't like a fire in the heart And in the eyes of all these people Don't you know that this could start On any street in any town In any state if any clown Decides that now's the time to fight For some ideal he thinks is right And if a million more agree There ain't no Great Society As it applies to you and me Our country isn't free And the law refuses to see If all that you can ever be Is just a lousy janitor Unless your uncle owns a store You know that five in every four Just won't amount to nothin' more Gonna watch the rats go across the floor And make up songs about being poor
"Blow your harmonica, son!"

Peter Perrett treated words as if he was Baudelaire fronting a Rock band. But even that can't quite prepare you for the despairing wit he spits out in these 8 lines - romantic languor was his speciality, so much so that it was either his drug of choice or a really close second. Mattsby and Viced - poetic men both can enjoy this and nod their heads knowingly... Indecision, lack of conviction Slurred diction failing what you're trying to say If you are a slave to love You're gonna pay and pay and pay
Our flightpath's a gradual descent from the firmament I can tell by the tone of the letters you sent What was once sacred is now filled with hatred How come such love can be dissipated?

Best Break Up Song Ever......one of the best opening lyrics ever and of course a top 10 American band too.
Time heals, time goes on and time really flies Time hurts and time can cut you, cut you down to size There's no need to touch you now, no, I'm doing fine Life too can cut you and I've cut you out of mine
You're making me... Sorry, sorry somehow Sorry, sorry somehow
There's no need to talk to you, well to know what's on your mind There's no need to see you either, no, I'm just being kind You want me to beg forgiveness, tender an apology It's not my fault and you're not getting one from me
Now I guess it's your decision now you decide Take me to the cleaners baby, take me for a ride Who ever cares for your affairs will sort it out for you Send me a subpoena baby tell me what to do
I don't have to think about you, think about the past Those days stand out in my mind and those days were the last I know the time is coming and I'm waiting for the day I'd give you everything in the world just to get it out of the way

I could fill this entire thread with the funniest lyrics ever written by Dr. Frank Portman (Ph.D in Luv) and his band. But none of them will be quite as funny and as charmingly offensive as this one. For Mattsby because that dude totally gets it....... Why don't you shave your legs cause a little hair can make a lot of difference Much more than whatever you're trying to prove I know you've got your pride and I know you think it makes a statement and you've got a right to be just as ugly as you want to be
Beauty is only skin deep and everybody's beautiful underneath I believe in that but let's not push it If you won't do it for me do it for our love .........for planet earth ........and the little children Do it for peace and humanity.......... and do it for the United States of America...... and baby if you'll only shave your legs The world will be a better place ............for you ..........for me and .......for America.
God Bless America

The best Rock band of their era arguably and in many ways the last of a Rock type - ie we'd like intellectual bookish types now more than this cliche of reprobates, malcontents and fnck-ups. That's too bad because as lyricists on this, one of their best singles they mixed shifting POVs ("on no, NOT me"), British slang and profanity, and a clear narrative story song. I always champion American music but this couldn't have been more British or any better......like most of the great bands they seem like the best mates in the world, a gang with instruments.
What a waster, what a fucking waster You pissed it all up the wall Round the corner where they chased her
There's tears coming out from everywhere The city's hard, the city's fair Get back inside you've got nothing on No you mind yer bleedin own you two bob cunt
When she wakes up in the morning She writes down all her dreams Reads like the Book of Revelations Or the Beano or the unabridged Ulysses
Oh I really wanna know So tell me, where does all the money go Where does all the money go Straight, straight Up her nose
And I never really liked it any way So much preferred it the other way yeah
What a divvy What a fucking div Talking like a moron Walking like a spiv I was laying in bed paying my rent He was knocking on the door for something That he lent her brother Meanwhile from under the covers she says Save me from tommorow, save me from tommorow Oh no, Oh no not me
And I never never liked it any way So much preferred it the other way yeah Never really liked it any way So much preferred it the other way yeah
What a waster, what a fucking waster You pissed it all up the wall Round the corner where they chased her
There's tears coming out from everywhere The citys hard the citys fair Get back inside You've got nothing on No you mind yer bleedin own you two bob cunt
What a waster, what a fucking waster You pissed it all up the wall Round the corner where they chased her

Bright light, big night, I'm feelin' strong Jim Beam givin' me the right to do wrong I'm giving you exactly one minute Now find a clean dress and get your ass in it
Know what I'm gonna do I'm get drunk, with or without you Yeah, I'm get drunk, with or without you
Well I'm tired of sitting around this chicken shack hell Gonna hit the bar gonna drink my fill Gotta vacant lot in the middle of my belly Good times are few and I need many
Maybe you can come along too But I'm gettin' drunk, with or without you Yeah, I'm gettin' drunk, with or without...
Maybe we should stay at home Leave our well-enoughs alone Call our mothers on the phone Hello, momma? You ever find a twenty dollar bill underneath a stack of trash cans?...
My favorite bar is down the road I'm gonna drink you pretty, you beautiful toad Call of the wild is a-ringing in my ear There's a worm in the bottle screaming "Get me outta here!"
Know what I gotta do I'm gettin' drunk, with or without you Yeah, I'm gettin' drunk, with or without you That's right, I'm gettin' drunk, with or without youListen it here: Special cover for song!

the man who found more ways than anyone to say "F-You" and "Bye" or better yet both simultaneously Easily! I was just talking to a friend the other day about how Dylan is the king of the mean put down song. I think the level of restraint he often maintained was perfect and made the lines all the more biting. Not sure if I'd call him THE greatest lyricist of all time, but he's Top 10-15 for sure.
