Not only that terry - if any director, ANY director not just Coppola - oh wait I'm sorry an "auteur" ever says anything remotely insightful about acting let me know because it will be one of the few times I can assure you of that. Actor on actors........directors on actors........same stupidity/lies/jealousy. Anyway....... Here's Jack from when he was young, you can tell he's shifty........cause of them eyebrows. Aunt Bee knew......

hm: to his joker performance in Batman 89. I loved that performance a lot as a kid I loved that perf, too, when I was a kid. I still like it a lot. But as a kid, I couldn't see he was miscast. Fat, bald and too old for the role. Actually, Burton cast him just because he was Nicholson.

Happy Birthday you sly fox. Terms of Endearment is my favorite performance of his - he and MacLaine are an all time great duo. And yet its his seductive and charming face/presence that lured me in - Carnal Knowledge. Been hooked ever since.

Cheating a bit but he deserves the day and a half tribute and it's the 22nd in Australia and they love me in Australia like I love The Saints - Eternally Yours album ammirite?.... How great was he - well so great - you have to step back and look at it to even comprehend it - it's not just the record 12 Oscar nods, it's 17 Golden Globe nods - all from film (!) - and 7 BAFTA nods for 8 roles (!), 3 wins. dude was an awards beast and to me a no-brainer all-time US top 5. He also has an amazing "one time" filmography of directors - Kubrick, Antonioni, Polanski, Scorsese, Kazan, Babenco, Payne, George Miller, Forman - whew! Hope you're enjoying year 12 of the well earned retirement and the Lakers championship Legend.......Happy 83rd

I don't know if I can ever see DiCaprio lap Nicholson for acting nominations if only because he's in his mid-forties and only has fiveI know this is from 2 years ago, but it seems like a weird thing to have said even then. At the age DiCaprio was then (44.5 years old), even Nicholson had 5 nominations. I think only Burton had more nominations at that age, ever. So 5 nominations at 44.5 years of age is by no means "only". But has it hindered DiCaprio? He has 6 nominations at 46.5 years of age. Unless I'm mistaken, nobody has ever had more acting nominations at that age. Not even Nicholson, who got his 7th nomination less than a month shy of his 47th birthday. If anybody is on pace to match Nicholson's acting nominations, it's clearly DiCaprio.

He had the Tarantino upcoming at the time, but nothing else on his docket, and it remained to be seen whether he would start working constantly or take DDL-level breaks in between. Now he's got an Adam McKay ensemble piece coming up, so it looks like he's primed to work consistently, at least for the time being. And because anything he does is automatically going to have Oscar buzz, yes, he might very well catch up with Nicholson, but I'd feel more confident in that if he can knock something out once every couple of years.

Anyway, regarding the topic, i think Jack may have the best filmography ever in cinema history, certainly my favorite. I mean, it's so diverse and eclectic, unlike DeNiro who, despite considering him the superior actor, occasionally returns to the organized crime genre.
Easy Rider Five Easy Pieces Carnal Knowledge The Last Detail Chinatown The Passenger One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest The Shining The Postman Always Rings Twice Reds Terms of Endearment Prizzi's Honor Heartburn Ironweed The Witches of Eastwick Batman A Few Good Men As Good As It Gets About Schmidt The Departed
Unparalleled legend.

I'll just repost something I said about Nicholson before: "If we're measuring careers by objective metrics, Nicholson has had by far the most successful career of any actor ever. It's hard to imagine any known actor matching him if we go by raw data. I think De Niro and Pacino are generally regarded as better actors, but I don't think any actor since Brando is as big of a legend as Nicholson is. He certainly has the largest footprint of any actor post-Brando as far as I'm concerned."

Jack Nicholson is the first of the "3 GOAT actors" birthday week too - and what's awesome about it is they are the only 3 movie star actors with "career level" achievements - in the big ones - who are all still alive: Nicholson today (my number 5 or 6 in our GOAT poll - but for Americans no lower than 4th - and I can argue him as #1 all time), Pacino - on the 25th (my number 3, but arguably #1 of all time or at least in the modern era), and DDL on the 29th - who was my number #8 or #9 iirc - which is exactly right for him........made myself laugh there ............ With Nicholson we always talk about who will "catch" his 12 Oscar nominations.......but he was more of an awards beast in other ways that other actors are not......... 6 Gloden Globe wins, 17 Globe nods (all film!), 3 BAFTA wins, off 7 nods......no one challenged those aside from eventually DDL and perhaps DiCap who is inching close to it..... But in his era he was alone with those numbers really ......and as usual with stuff like that, his awards success doesn't really make his case why he's one of only 4 Americans that you can legit argue as " THE GOAT" imo without lying to yourself which we do a lot imo...... The stories this guy could tell if he ever wrote a book, ammirite? .........like that time he got drunk with Putin

Happy Birthday πΊπΊ
People forget how loved he was by major critics groups back in the 70s (back when competition was fierce with the actors he was up against). He's won LAFC, NSFC and NYFCC multiple times which not many people have accomplished along with the industry awards. Even Leo (who is his closest comparison today) has never had acclaim with critics groups the way Nicholson has.

12 Oscar nominations (More than any male actor ever)
8 nominations for Best Actor (behind only Olivier and Tracy with nine)
Five Easy Pieces, Chinatown, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, The Shining, The Last Detail, A Few Good Men, Terms of Endearment, As Good As It Gets, and About Schmidt are all in my opinion all-time level performances
