I think they're two of the best writers working in the industry right now, and two of the best filmmakers overall.
In many movies, characters serve for little else than to advance the plot, while these two always take their time to fully flesh out their characters, in all their complexity and nuance. Margaret is a fantastic character study of a young girl discovering the real world and losing her innocence for the first time ....it's messy, chaotic and all over the place, but that's how adolescence, and the transition to adulthood, often is. Another Year is a very authentic, moving portrayal of deep, lasting unfulfillment and emotional fragility. It's funny at times, uncomfortable and awkward at others, but never less than real.. and that's what we always get with Lonergan and Mike Leigh, characters that never feel like fake, written creations or mouthpieces, instead they leap off the screen as real, actual human beings, that we may as well encounter in our own, daily life. They never shy away from showing little bits of details, quirks, eccentricities or dialogue that others may consider superfluous or dispensable, which actually add so much to the whole picture. and that's a very commendable feat, not very often seen these days, in my opinion.
What do you all think?

I don't think it is a sin to write characters who are there to advance the plot. Suffice to say to we can appreciate both plot driven and character driven films.
People complaining about lack of character development in every film is becoming a cliche in itself. This isn't a necessity. The same applies to the other side too, where we complain about lack of a plot in character driven films.

I like Lonergan's movies okay, but I don't think he's even remotely comparable to Leigh in this regard.

Both are excellent character explorers. Something I really love about movies. I would always watch one of their movies. I must say I preferred 90s Mike Leigh to the 00s Mike Leigh but he is still great.

Leigh is sort of incomparable, due to his super specific process. But I don't think Kenneth Lonergan is on that level in general, either. He wrote a great Doug episode, but someone like Asghar Farhadi is more in the conversation of the world's best dramatists. Andrei Zvyagintsev is in that class as well.

Oh yeah Farhadi is a good one too, although I've only seen A Separation, easily one of the better written and most morally complex films of recent years.

Lonergan isn't fit to lick Leigh's boots.
