I don't know how legit this is, but it could potentially be a great part for Penn.
At one point, before Iñárritu was able to get The Revenant (and probably even before Birdman I think) off the ground, which could also have starred Penn alongside DiCaprio, he was eyeing this one with Penn in the lead. Penn is working on the movie for quite some time now, with his daughter already attached to it. We'll see if she has the talent, having greatly gifted parents doesn't yet mean much, and all this smells a little bit like a vanity project for Sean after his not so great last couple of years. The talent is there, but maybe it would have been a good decision to let someone else direct him in this (on the other hand there's his daughter, so). Butterworth is a good writer and Mr. Julia Roberts, Daniel Moder is attached to lense this.
I'm rooting for him, one of the most talented actors of his generation. His part sounds great and complex, and I've long thought it could bring something special out of him.
From earlier news about this:
And earlier I think:

Love Penn and love this project ........not sure I love him as a director, he always trips up the projects he directs imo. I consider him the best film actor of this generation but he gets a lot of hate on here and his career is off the rails (lot's of Denzel/Hanks/Cage-Rourke fans) - but to me he's the most interesting actor of the 80s bunch (though you could put Bridges there too and he may "win" that). He hit the higher peaks at least than his peers imo ........Butterworth is an interesting, sort of trendy hottish writer which you don't get much nowadays either.

Don’t see this as a good idea. He’s not proven to be a great director thus far, and casting his daughter is just going to give this an air of a ridiculous vanity project. His career is also in dire straits, it would probably be better to work on building up some career goodwill before making what seems like something that has a high chance of failure.

I’m a Sean Penn hater but that didn’t seem too bad. I’m a little more interested now

I see that it also has Sean Penn's little racist/homophobic/brat of a son in it as well (Hopper Penn). Ah you just gotta love blatant nepotism. I still remember him calling a black paparazzi guy the N word AND the F word awhile back. smh Just look at this ugly POS. If his parents weren't Sean Penn and Robin Wright I'm pretty sure he'd be working at Jack in the Box. Anyways, the trailer looked somewhat promising and hopefully its a return to form for Sean Penn. We shall see.
