Apparently, Denzel Washington helped Austin Butler land the role of Elvis. Denzel cold called Baz Lurhmann (whom he's never met or worked with) after Butler had sent in his audition tape, to talk Butler up, saying what a good actor he was and how great his work ethic was. At the time, Butler was acting on Broadway with Washington as part of the ensemble cast for The Iceman Cometh.
www.yahoo.com/amphtml/entertainment/cold-call-denzel-washington-helped-185043338.htmlI didn't even realize he played Tex in Once Upon a Time. He was pretty good there. I think he scores a nod here.

That’s really awesome he would go out of his way to do that. Can’t imagine a Director not putting an actor at the top of their list after that. Yeah, aside from being the GOAT actor, Denzel is by all accounts a very stand up dude who goes out of his way to help others. He's got a bit of a scary reputation as someone who doesn't suffer fools gladly and doesn't like to engage in idle chit-chat when working, but if he's impressed by co-stars on the job, he'll go out of his way to champion them for other things. But yeah, I'd imagine Denzel's endorsement made all the difference to Butler getting the role, as the competition for a part like Elvis (with actors much better known than him as well) would have been insane. Well, if Denzel didn't waste time trying to get someone else an Oscar nod he would have his 10th by now.

I saw The Northman again this afternoon and I heard a few older people in the lobby afterward chatting about how excited they were for it. When I went to go see The Northman, the old people sitting at the back burst out laughing at the beginning of the trailer when Elvis was revealed after the bad Hanks narration Why not both?

Good on Denzel. Butler has gotten my thumbs up since The Shannara Chronicles on MTV. Also good on him for encouraging Glen Powell, who was awesome in Everybody Wants Some!!

I’m guessing it’s going to be huge for that demographic and put up big B.O. numbers.

Awesome news! Just more reason why Denzel is one of the greats.

Awesome news! Just more reason why Denzel is one of the greats. Miles Teller, Harry Styles, Ansel Elgort and Aaron Taylor- Johnson must all be cursing Denzel's name right now, because they were all in the running to play Elvis, and lost out to the least known guy in Butler because Denzel stuck his nose in

At least three of those guys, sound like they would have been potentially disastrous as Elvis.

I think he actually looks more like Elvis than any of them and has the same kind of build.

Miles Teller could have maybe been good, it's Aaron Taylor Johnson, who left me scratching my head. Aside from the fact that he's probably a little bit too wimpy to play Elvis, he already played John Lennon.

This guy looks enough like Elvis and the acting is the important thing so we'll see. Thank sweet baby Jesus Ansel Elgort didn't get the role. This is pretty much my default reaction to any movie he's not in. Barf @ the concept of Harry Styles getting it too, speaking of people who look nothing like Elvis.

Elvis’s wife, daughter, and granddaughter have now all praised the film and given rave reviews to Butler. Even with the summer release I have to think he’s a major contender for a Best Actor nom.

From the Cannes reactions so far, it looks like Tom Hanks performance is going to be divisive at best.

Damn, Butler got them rival Hollywood Pretty boys shook! . He might be the new "It Boy" they were all hoping to become after Chalamet.Don't know why Dylan O'Brien felt to need to chastise Variety for their Bulter story, but it kinda makes him look jealous about another actor's success. He's getting dragged on Twitter for it and deleted his comment.
