I know there was discussion in the A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood thread about Hanks possibly getting a nomination for playing Mr. Rogers. My feeling is no because I don't think many actors are going to think it's a stretch for him even if he nails it and gets great reviews which I'm sure he will. With this though if it actually happens, I feel like this is the type of role that he needs to be nominated again.
I know Luhrmann only got Oscar's attention with Moulin Rouge!, and he wasn't even nominated for director, so this could be another miss for him, but I think Hanks could still be a lone nomination type of deal if the film isn't completely panned and depending on how competitive Best Supporting Actor is.
Even if it doesn't work out for Hanks again, maybe this is a sign that he's going to step out of the nice guy box more often now.

Look at the writer and Director here. Mr. Rogers will remain his strongest play in quite some time and he will probably get into Supporting for it with ease.

Sounds like a plum role for Hanks. Don't care much for Luhrmann tough.
It's not the coolest thing to say, but I'm not the coolest guy around, so I don't care 🙃, but Hanks really doesn't get the acclaim he deserves these days. I think he's doing fine for a guy at this stage in his career, does theater, a lot of solid to very good character work, gets some interesting sounding projects to work on on a regular basis. Yes, not everything works out the way it should, but he's still an exciting actor in my opinion. Would be great to see him go full Henry Fonda in OUATITW. Maybe for Park's upcoming western (haven't read the script). Or if De Niro isn't able to participate in the next Scorsese/DiCaprio vehicle, why not cast Hanks as the evil mastermind behind all those killings? That would be inspired casting. PTA was right when he talked about what a wonderful actor Hanks can be and that he really wants to work with him some day.
Btw, Larry Hagman was quite wonderful as a Colonel Parker kind of guy in the Michael Apted directed Stardust.

Bit of an elephant in the room...with all this #metoo business and dredging up sexual misdeeds (proven or unproven) of entertainers and muscians, dead or alive (Michael Jackson, R. Kelly etc)....are they going to be able to get away with an Elvis biopic that downplays the fact that was was a sexual predator with a thing for underage girls (he groomed his future wife Priscilla from the age of 14).
Or does he get the whitewashed version, as the "hero" of this presumed biopic.

pupdurcs Yeah, that could be problematic, in this day and age, at least as soon as some blogger or anyone starts a campaign. The bean counters over at Warner Bros. are probably aware of this. The same could be said of a new Chaplin biopic etc. I've already ranted enough about this topic in the past, so I'll leave it at that. The realities of life are a lot of times more complicated and layered than today's media world would like them to be.

Yes, I don't dislike Ansel Elgort as an actor, but I just don't see a resemblance there at all. Plus, I'm not sure that he's got "it" to play someone like Elvis. I'm not sure about Miles Teller having "it" either, but I think he's the most talented out of the ones that are up for the role. Plus, I think he can reasonably pass for Elvis.

Tarantino originally had an older actor in mind.

Pivotal role for Hanks who imo who has never pulled of gradations of darkness for his artistic range which for all his comic/dramatic chops often is in the same narrow dramatic register - and I've seen all his work. This is the change-up people wrongly said he needed to get an Oscar nod in 2019 (where are all those people who said he'd miss again this year?). Its a bio-role he isn't perfect for - an unlikable larger than life character.
It's a grand slam actor-ish stretch on paper, now is this the project and director for it well.......we'll see.

It’s coming out June 3, 2022 now. Well this release date probably spares us of another year of " Tom Hanks is definitely gonna win his third Oscar" talk that always fizzles out into nothing. The release date now positions it closer to something like The Great Gatsby. Baz Lurhmann is not a big enough deal with Oscars and/or Critics for a movie of his to survive that long in the awards conversation with such an early release unless it's a flat-out masterpiece (and he hasn't got one. The closest to that would be Moulin Rouge).
