Marvel doesn't deserve Zhao Yeah god forbid they hire talented directors and the quality of their films gets better. Marvel's brand and cinematic formula are so established by this point I don't see much room for change. They can finesse the formula some more but I don't think Zhao could change anything on a significant level even if she wanted to. No Marvel film has ever been anything other than a Marvel film. Thor Ragnarok was the closest to breaking that mold but in the end did it do anything more than simply liven up the formula with new flair? And in a market so oversaturated with these films by now, I don't see any reason to be optimistic that a truly visionary artist is going to be sucked through that process once again, and having only seen one of her films which was an intimate and leisurely character study using non-actors representing their real lives, I have no idea what Zhao could bring to this hyper-commercial formula. I am glad she's going to be getting a massive paycheck, hopefully to help bankroll future REAL projects, but I'm also positive about one thing: The Eternals is going to be a Marvel movie, not a Chloe Zhao movie, and I have no reason to be excited for another Marvel movie. Half a dozen of these things get released every year and they're all fundamentally the same. The same beats, the same jokes (basically), the same style, the same structure, the same horribly-staged and shot action pieces.

Marvel doesn't deserve Zhao Yeah god forbid they hire talented directors and the quality of their films gets better. Building a bit on what Tommen said (which is all absolutely accurate) ... this isn't just a Marvel thing, this is how the Hollywood studio system has worked with few exceptions throughout its history. Studio films were always meant to be distinguishable by the company that produced it, not by the filmmaker(s) behind it. As perhaps the biggest entertainment property today, Marvel is no exception. Sure, there's a hint of Ryan Coogler in Black Panther, a dash of Taika Waititi in Thor: Ragnarok, but these films are virtually the same, because that's the studio's goal. They are supposed to be easily recognized by the audience as all being a part of the same whole. It's a long-established system that inherently leaves no room for any true artistic voice. This isn't a Chloé Zhao film, this is a Marvel film. She won't have final cut or anything close to it for that matter. I hope this only ends up being a great career opportunity for her in terms of her future marketability ... and best case scenario this will allow for her to make her own work with a studio budget in the future ... but the film itself won't be any different from what this studio has already established, and that much is practically a guarantee.

I get what you guys are saying but Coogler and Waititi have both stated Marvel granted them quite a bit of artistic freedoms within the structure. Sure, there is still a structure and certain notes need to be hit so they don’t have 100% free will to go off the deep end, but they can still elevate their movies from being complete paint by numbers. Hell, Marvel let Shane Black turn The Mandarin into a drunk actor just pretending to be a villain.
At the end of the day this should only be viewed as a positive.

I'm gonna play Devil's advocate here and add two things to Pittsnogle_Goggins 's points. The first is that if you're a fan of Zhao's work, you should be happy about the exposure that she'll certainly get from this. If she plays ball and the film goes over well, that'll open doors for her in ways that something like The Rider, raved as it was, simply can't due to how underseen it still is. I'm not particularly excited for the 76th installment in the MCU either, but all in all this is a good career move for her in the long term, since it might potentially allow her to make films with bigger budgets and better support from her distributors. Consider that Patty Jenkins had a critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning debut in 2003, then had to go 14 years without another theatrical release before Wonder Woman blew up, put her name on the map and made studios seek her out. People in the film business have to play the game sometimes, which includes accepting jobs we might be less than enthusiastic about. Which brings me to my second point: Zhao getting an opportunity like this is a pretty considerable achievement in an industry in which only 1 (one) non-white woman has ever been granted a nine-digit budget to make a live action feature so far. (Ava DuVernay was the first, and Zhao will probably be the second.) I don't imagine that she and other Chinese women have that many studio heads throwing money at them and offering them work that's guaranteed to actually be seen by more than just a handful of people in the festival circuit, so I don't begrudge her for taking this offer at all.

If Angie's only going to do a movie every 4-5 years I wish she'd do something more interesting than this. But Black Panther was still pretty much your standard Marvel movie except that there were some actual non-chrome colors in the Wakanda scenes. Admittedly they did let Shane Black run wild with Iron Man III, but I've always assumed that's because he's buddies with RDJ. They've never gotten that far off the formula in any of their other movies.

Marvel continues to kill it with casting. They just announced Tony Leung as The Mandarin in Shang-Chi. What a time to be alive.

You don't get in this shape just by working out (look at those veins!).At a certain age (and he's over 40), it becomes really hard to get cut like this naturally. Yet actors seem to be able to do it at will....

Well if you get a role in a Marvel film, it’s pretty much an in-house rule that you take that super soldier serum lol this tweet from Simu Liu had me cracking up 😂
