That's a great trailer - we have had some ace trailers lately - this and the Tár teaser ......what this evokes is a more logical mesh of style and subject than Spencer imo - one of the reasons that audiences didn't respond to that movie - and part of it is it wasn't that good aside from Stewart tbh.....is irl that "life as horrror" works better for an actress - or THE actress - than it did for the Princess where "reality" could be viewed differently from the film's take on her.... Monroe is a lot harder to do that with and is constantly trapped and re-trapped from youth until Death (by her looks, her sexuality, her idea of her talent, her ambition to be something / someone else etc).
I think people may cut this film a lot of slack because even it doesn't work in the way a biopic normally does - (boring) mimicry, recreation of era and replication of appearances, accents etc. - it can hit out of the park just for directorial vision / POV......from that trailer anyway........striking visually / thematically at least......

Looks incredibly striking and I have no doubt in Dominik's ability to tackle these themes. Ana will get criticism for not completely shaking the accent, but I think she's doing a much better job with the tone and intonation than, say, Michelle Williams.
"Only On Netflix" is maybe the most disappointing 3 words to attach to the end of any trailer, though.

Raging Bull level ambitious. I guess DeNiro looked funny to some in 1980, he turned out alright. In other words, I'll take an open mind approach to this. And Michelle Williams is a pretty low bar to set.... that's like the most unimpressive performance of her career.

None latina actress won an Oscar in a leading role. In fact only 4 were oscar nominated. 2 from México, 1 for Brazil and one for Colombia.
Zero latinas born in US were even Oscar nominated in a leading role.

I got goosebumps from this trailer. I'm liking the apparently "nontraditional biopic" approach this tailer is projecting, while Ana seems to be the perfect case where a performance does not need to be too accurate an imitation of the subject person to be effective and moving.

Oh my God. That trailer is stunning and they cast an actress with the best physical resemblance. Finally they cast someone who has Marilyn's eyes.

Idk I’m not impressed by the trailer, and the accent still not being correct is glaring. Wasn’t Marilyn’s voice and the way she spoke a huge part of her sex appeal?

Maybe Andrew Dominik was correct when he said it would be one of the greatest of all time? Lol. I can’t wait. This is going to be insane.

So it’s already getting review bombed on RT. I doubt most of these people have seen it yet, but the subject matter seems to be a sticking point.

David Ehrlich: I’d always thought that Marilyn Monroe biopics would be so much better if they cruelly devoted several different scenes to her CGI fetuses. think I might have been wrong.

Does no one else find it disgusting that both the book and the movie have a graphic rape scene that didn’t even happen irl?
It seems really creepy, disrespectful, and degrading to concoct a rape scene for a real person. It does feel exploitative tbh. Learning about the fictional rape scene turns me off. And reading some reviews where they said the movie films the rape in an exploitative way is a bigger turn off
A lot of people have criticized the use of rape in media where rape is used as a plot device, and I usually disagreed with that criticism. But this is particularly insidious to me especially bc it involves a real person. It’s incredibly fucked up
Making a movie about a horribly exploited woman that exploits her in death is horrible

“We’re living at a time where it’s very important to present women as empowered, and they want to reinvent Marilyn Monroe as an empowered woman, you know, that’s what they want to see,” he continued.Well, he's not wrong .......the truth is though we're always living in THAT time - it's always a time of push-pull .......it's just whether you notice it - Jeanne Dielman - the greatest film ever (sarcasm, I like it though!) was made in that time of feminism .....people saying Porn stars are more "feminist" than Roman Polanski's films because he's a rapist (they're not btw, that's actually crushing irony not misunderstood feminism - get it?) because they "control" their bodies etc. THAT nonsense has been articulated since before the first time Marilyn Chambers saw a banana ......every generation thinks they are the smartest, most clever, and the most moral (the millenials think they are without God these days - riiiiiiiiight) - every generation thinks they know more about history, the movies about history and people in history. Sure, the younger generation today - as a whole - is particularly annoying, borderline evil, somewhat stupid - though well-intentioned - and when they die I'll offer to keep THEM in my thoughts and prayers - but I'll do it unironically - because I'm not a moral relativist and I have a consistent moral center thanx....... BUT that's maybe why you either have to outfox the public - the total public, not just the younger generation(s) - and make your Marilyn Monroe movie about Veronica Lake instead for example.......or you just live with the reaction to your film as you made it.......which he seems fine with tbh.......he made the film he wanted to make.....he's lucky......not all Art - or speech is that easily able to be articulated......
