Actually, I tell a lie. Denzel's character in He Got Game loses worse than Brando's in On The Waterfront, because Brando's character at least gets to go back to work and gets the respect of his peers after getting beaten up. So even though he's "loser character" for most of the film, he kind of wins in the end. Denzel's character just gets locked up. Yeah but he could have been a contender instead of a bum. Which is what he is...

Again, a lot of silliness in this thread confusing "losing" in the role vs the character and "playing a loser" As I said clearly, he has plenty of roles where he played a loser but a memorable role where he loses is by far in the minority of his career - and he wants that Raging Bull, Dog Day Afternoon, Chinatown, Conversation, McCabe & Mrs Miller etc. Roman J. Israel is exactly NOT that kind of role at all that doesn't fit those above - he turns himself in, he's noble - he writes a letter to the judge for Godsakes........ Yeah, I think you have a highly overactive imagination on this. And your thesis doesn't really work. Like on any level. God loves a trier though. Better off sticking to his lack of BAFTA recognition or whatever as his supposed career hole Oh, I'm sure by the end of the day you will somehow twist his lack of a BAFTA nomination into a positive actually - like he's fighting a battle against systemic racism or something like that...... I haven't even talked about his career holes as an actor - you're just very defensive, now run along .......

Oh he wouldn't "have" to lose - but it works better dramatically if he does and how they are presenting it/marketing it.. This movie is being sold to us as a "twist ending", well...................a "non-twist" ending would be the cop catches the killer straightforwardly. It's been conveyed that Little Things is something like Se7en and dark.........that means somebody has to lose on the police side - lose something at least (like Mills did) - and this part of your question then doesn't really apply: "And exactly how do we assume it'd be him and not any other acclaimed actor" - well, because acclaimed actor number 1 is the presumed killer ( Leto) - so there is no twist if he loses ..........the other acclaimed actor ( Malek) could lose but that makes less sense based on the cast: The 65 year old "guy who wins all the time" in this plot (just like the Denzel Washington, the actor playing him, very often wins with his movie characters too)...........always solves the case..........has a distinct philosophy of police work.............and has the backstory that the movie is based around.........well, him losing would be the most logical twist here....... Well, don't forget that in Se7en there was no twist as to who was the killer, in fact that was shown way before the ending, but the twist didn't uave to do with his identity. Actually I'd love it if it was a totally different twist all around.Me too .......I love the twist in something like Presumed Innocent where you're set-up to expect something else and then have the rug pulled out from under you. If the twist is something else in Little Things I'd be really impressed because that would mean the director got this cast to join in on his vision rather than vehicle for the stars themselves............which is possible since he wrote it so long ago and when he was a young man.

Not really a spoiler but just in case I'll put it behind a tag.
Just to play a spoiler tag game morton what's intriguing there with the bags is he's alone with gloves - so it doesn't appear to be a part of the investigation or if so he's isolated in whatever he's doing there............ yet he was prepared enough to have gloves so it isn't something he just stumbled on - I mean it could be something he discovered and he had gloves in his cop car but that feels wrong to me to show in a trailer I don't know if many follow my posts enough to notice but since October I've been on a run of horror films and the trailer is kind of ingenious at encouraging and confounding expectations. Really looking forward to trailer 2 to see if it's more plot mechanics based and makes Malek more of a thing.......

EW tweeting Leto's quote about Washington and tagging him. Pretty high (but common) praises for Zel but it's always nice to hear, especially coming from such an eccentric actor who likes to very often go FULL method (Chapter 27 anyone ? ) and talk a lot about it to the point that some people make fun on him. Denzel has his shares of FULL method performances and when you give what is arguably the greatest, most spot on, biopic performance in the history of film, your abilities to fully embody (internally/externally) a character should never be questioned but over the years he has been less obvious with these kind of things even if his homework/research to "find" the character is probably second to none. So yeah, I would probably have been less surprised if Leto gaves that kind of praises to a chameleon like Gary Oldman but at the end of the day he is an actor and he recognizes the Master.

Very good points. Even though Denzel is a method actor and has done transformative work, as you say, he's not someone whose percieved as always taking it to the obvious extremes of some other actors, so yeah, I'd have expected someone like Leto to reserve that level of adulatory praise for someone like Oldman or Daniel Day-Lewis in Zel's generation , whose chameleonic approach is closer to Leto's style (drastic physical transformations, funny voices etc). But as you say, Leto is an actor, so he knows what's up.

Ooo, this looks so up my street! A little generic perhaps, and I'm not a fan of Leto at all (or Malek, for that matter, though he can be good), but Denzel looks great as always, and I'm always down for a dark, stylish crime thriller. Bring it on!

Here's an odd thing. Usually in things like this that get acclaim, you'd expect the person playing the antagonist to get a supporting actor run. If it were anyone but Jared Leto, would we be thinking it as a threat for that category, especially in a year as wide open as this?

Can you imagine the seasonal plot twist if Denzel actually crashed the Oscar race and became a legit Best Actor contender for this? I'm still erring on the side of caution that it will just play as a quality subscription booster for HBO Max, and not as an Oscar contender, but these early takes are certainly interesting. Deadline called the film "brilliant" in their Golden Globes breakdown as well.

But if he's great in it, that just plays into his Macbeth campaign. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Washington would want to keep out of it for fear of crashing the party if the narrative starts coalescing around Chadwick Boseman, who Washington obviously wants to support a win for.

He barely campaigned at all for Roman J Israel Esq. And he still got in despite divisive reviews for the movie and the film flatlining at the box office. He's Denzel. On the male side, the respect he has among AMPAS members among active actors is second to none. And he is the newly minted Greatest Actor Of The 21st Century (and almost everyone in the industry is fully aware he's been bestowed that distincton by the New York Times). Like I said, I still don't really believe this will be an Oscar contender, but if anyone could possibly break into a crowded Best Actor race at the last minute with a highly regarded movie and performance (with minimal campaigning), it's this dude.

Washington won't get nominated for this, lol. His son John David has more chances this year (and still i don't think he'll make it either).

Well, guess Denzel is willing to promote this after all . Short segment courtesy of Entertainment Tonight with Leto and Malek praising Denzel, and Denzel saying he's the old guy now to these young turks (says it's full circle, because he was the young turk with Gene Hackman in Crimson Tide). Probably the most interesting tidbit is Denzel saying his daughter Olivia has a role in the movie. Probably not a very big one, but he does say she is a very good actress and going to be on the heels of brother John David.

Ratings/Reviews have popped up on Letterboxd probably a bunch of early nonsense/fake reviews like we used to see on IMDB but I don't use this site like you youngins do so I dunno about that much NOTE...... they deleted some that had (false and contradictory even?) spoilers in the reviews - so maybe just stick with ratings not the reviews if you click at allEmbargoed of course officially so don't take it too seriously either.....because that's always a risk especially with this movies profile and the kind of movie it is and the HBO streaming deal added into the mix....... BTW: One of the actual film critics listed here " Pamela Hutchinson (UK)" I sort of know slightly - my US film critic buddy that I sometimes talk about on here or used to in the IMDB days introduced her to me.........she was........um.........interesting......let's just say that .... letterboxd.com/film/the-little-things-2021/ratings/

Olivia has been learning her craft in theater and in small tv roles. I know she's going the Viola Davis route (which learning acting on stage is great to do if you can afford/put the time in to do) but having the Washington name will some doors opened to her that weren't to Davis for a long while. Interesting that he thinks she's better than JDW as well.

She's been honing her craft for nearly a decade now on stage and in small film and TV parts, and probably gotten all the mistakes a rookie actor would make out of her system now. Her Pops sounds like he thinks she's ready for the big stage now. We shall see.

The site removed posts with A LOT of spoilers a few days ago (but not all so don't read the reviews, the link above is to the ratings - though the spoilers may be BS entirely anyway) - why don't they just block all posts from appearing at all until it opens like RT does or IMDB does (more or less?) ...how can you be an RT critic and post pre-Embargo feedback?
