These would be 2 of the songs I think of immediately because even now I play them together - released months apart in '84 suggesting death, (in one case at least) possible murder, overwhelming guilt, and terror. Since it was the 80s these songs suggest AIDS death even though neither is "about" that - chilling stuff.

Another fave of mine and when you call your band The Godfathers you have to have some swagger and on their best songs like this one they did - a My Generation/Born To Lose/Bastards Of Young/Smells Like Teen Spirit for their own disaffected generation. They also dressed great and looked like they were auditioning for The Krays years before it was even made.

Much like the '70s, this decade could be nothing but The Boss. So I'm again going to limit it to one song per artist.
1. "Born in the U.S.A." ~ Bruce Springsteen 2. "She's a Mystery to Me" ~ Roy Orbison 3. "Time After Time" ~ Cyndi Lauper 4. "Cat People" ~ David Bowie 5. "Hammer to Fall" ~ Queen 6. "With or Without You" ~ U2 7. "Billie Jean" ~ Michael Jackson 8. "Faith" ~ George Michael 9. "We Didn't Start the Fire" ~ Billy Joel 10. "Purple Rain" ~ Prince 11. "Panic" ~ The Smiths 12. "Sexual Healing" ~ Marvin Gaye 13. "Wind Beneath My Wings" ~ Bette Midler 14. "You Give Love A Bad Name" ~ Bon Jovi 15. "Sweet Child o' Mine" ~ Guns 'n' Roses 16. "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" ~ Starship 17. "Africa" ~ Toto 18. "Jessie's Girl" ~ Rick Springfield 19. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" ~ Joy Division 20. "Bette Davis Eyes" ~ Kim Carnes

The Jam were a 70s band of course but their very best work to me was in 1980 with the magnificent Sound Affects album and in 1981 with this baffling, brilliant single. A frightening song with dynamic musical interplay, evocative lyrics and a whopping change of pace ending. Fans of the band were probably wondering where the catchy chorus was but this sound was a pivotal change-up - cold, almost ugly, menacing. One of 3 like-minded standalone singles - all released within 12 months in 80-81 (!) - along with Mission of Burma's Academy Fight Song and Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart - they pointed the way to much of the very best stuff coming in the decade.

A supergroup of sorts featuring Bernard Sumner of New Order, (occasionally) Neil Tennant and the cool one from The Smiths. Um.

It wasn't the first rap song or the best song (The Message would top it 2 years later) but The Breaks changed music forever all by itself. This song is constructed as an almost parody upbeat party song - look at this performance! - but it is rooted in the blues, bad things happening to black people specifically - unfaithfulness, rip-offs, bills piling up - well those are the "breaks". Rock artists like Blondie and The Clash loved this and cut their own rap influenced songs in less than a year - this reminded them of the youth culture and punk - initially no one was listening at all - how Punk is that?
It divided (or united) you along race, culture and economic lines in 1980. By the time rap and hip hop took over it would almost never sing lyrics like this - because just like what happened to the Blues ........no one wanted to be reminded about being poor, fncked over or think about ..........the "breaks".

I cannot decide between the iconic songs by Vasco Rossi in the 80s. 🤔

Next up I was going to post I Will Dare - which is my fave song by my fave band from my fave album ever (what pacinoyes not The Smiths or The Cure? - yeah no, thanksforasking) but I will go a different way today instead and change it up by picking this song which sums up the entire sensibility that the "big 4" bands - the 'Mats/Mission of Burma/Husker Du/REM - created. To me what came after them: Pixies/Dinosaur Jr/Sonic Youth and later Nirvana were lesser and more of a formula though I like them all to various degrees. This great song however described the romantic feelings in an audience the earlier bands codefied - "So fncked I can't believe it" and ".......what a mess" as J Mascis memorably puts it

The best voice of the 80s was Cindy Lauper. Sorry Mrs Houston, but Lauper just had a wider extension on the bass side. And Annie Lennox was shorter on the highest notes.

Here's a forgotten 80s - the straight ahead, no frills, Rock band. Not punk, post-punk, goth, metal, new wave or even ....that interesting Their influences were all 60s stuff and the Byrds were a big one. But unlike the 60s bands originality they more resembled Tom Petty's straight ahead take on it (but without his songwriting chops or backing band). This was one of the best songs though by a band who name drops in this song Jean Shrimpton and Bill Wyman and other examples of it would include bigger bands too (INXS).

Another fave of mine - the best Replacements song after '87 imo - some would say Achin to Be or Someone Take The Wheel or Nobody - there were many great ones even when they started running out of gas but Portland was the truest gem for me. A heartbreaking and beautiful song about how being them had prevented them from ever being anything else. Don't Tell A Soul could have been comprised of this, I'll Be You, Date To Church, Gudbye T'Jane, Anywhere Is Better Than Here, Rock N Roll Ghost, Achin' To Be, Wake Up, We Know The Night - damn, that's a better album than the album they actually made with songs they had just laying around - that's what the 80s really were .........whole decade missed it....... by that much.

An obvious pick and another stand alone single - added later to the US release of the classic debut. The single version here with the very dreamy and true Stone Roses lyric.........."but nothing means.............anything........anymore".
