Normal practice in France is a 36 month wait between theater exhibition and streaming?

Didn't know Diao Yinan had a film coming this year - after watching Black Coal Thin Ice a few times I was for a period of time slightly obsessed and I kept looking into what his next project would be - great news, idk what it's about but I'm looking forward to it.

It would be nice to see Johnnie To's Eight and a Half, described as An eight-part anthology film exploring the history of Hong Kong from the 1940s to present day in competition. He's been in competition many times ( in the 3 festivals ) and never is too late to finally be recognized And I lik the idea of Toy Story 4, it's like when Shrek and Moulin Rouge were in competition, haha

I kinda like Radegund: A Hidden Life myself. Radegund needs to be in there somewhere. 'A Hidden Life' sounds like a sequel to 'A Quiet Place'

Yeahhh, I'm glad if this is finally premiering somewhere (and hopefully out theatrically later in the year), but not at all a fan of this title change. Radegund sounded cool ... A Hidden Life sounds like a boring Miramax Oscar-bait drama based on a forgotten 19th century British novel ... ehhh. Feels like a lazy change made to make it more "marketable," which, um, this is a Malick film, good luck with that I guess.

She's insanely great in loopy comedies imo - or at least was in The Trouble With You which I think is the last thing she did - like I tell everyone she's the world's best actress but no one expects her to give an original, energetic comic performance like that. The plot to this new film sounds similarly wtf-ish - can't wait to see her go back to that well. Not only do I say she's great all the time, but she's done a lot of work with no repetition of tricks or behavior........kind of a sorceress really

Ciro Guerra was just tapped to head the International Critics' jury. Which probably means Waiting for the Barbarians will not be in competition at Cannes. Which makes sense, as it just finished shooting in December, but perhaps this means a Venice bow, which is lately proving to be a better springboard for awards.

This guy, who is is supposedly quite accurate, has made a list of 100 films likely to pop up in various categories at the festival. These are the films vying for a spot in competition apparently. I think only four French films are allowed in comp so be wary of those. Pedro Almodóvar’s PAIN AND GLORY | Spain Marco Bellocchio’s THE TRAITOR | Italy Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne’s THE YOUNG AHMED | Belgium Arnaud Desplechin’s ROUBAIX, A LIGHT | France Lav Diaz’s 2019 | Philippines ( ) Mati Diop’s LA PROCHAINE FOIS LE FEU | France Xavier Dolan’s MATTHIAS AND MAXINE | Canada Kôji Fukada’s THE GIRL MISSING | Japan Jim Jarmusch’s THE DEAD DON’T DIE | United States Bong Joon-ho’s PARASITE | South Korea Pablo Larrain’s EMA | Chile Ken Loach’s SORRY WE MISSED YOU | United Kingdom Terrence Malick’s A HIDDEN LIFE | United States Guillaume Nicloux’s C’EST EXTRA | France Corneliu Porumboiu’s THE WHISTLERS | Romania Céline Sciamma’s PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE | France Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s MOTHER | Spain Elia Suleiman's IT MUST BE HEAVEN | Palestine Quentin Tarantino’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD | United States Justine Triet’s SYBIL | France Alice Winocour’s PROXIMA | France (I don't think this will be ready) Chloé Zhao’s NOMADLAND | United States ( stephen found dead)

Xavier Dolan’s MATTHIAS AND MAXINE | Canada Chloé Zhao’s NOMADLAND | United States ( stephen found dead) Goddamn it, can't Xavier Dolan fuck off already? Also, Zhao wastes no time.

Like every student film in college uses more crew. She's potentially a major talent emerging....

I really can't wait to see what she does next. Her teaming up with supremely talented actors like McDormand and Straithairn makes me even more excited. Plus, how cool would it be for a woman of Asian descent in competition at Cannes?! I can't even remember the last time that happened.

Updated tea!
- Jim Jarmusch’s THE DEAD DON’T DIE is supposedly opening the festival. Unsure if it’s still in comp like Everybody Knows was last year.
- Brilliante Mendoza (ugh. I don’t see Fremaux choosing two films from the Philippines in comp, so I don’t know what’s happening with the Diaz), Ira Sachs (yay) and Xavier Dolan (yay?) are in competition.
- Larrain is out of the festival since Netflix has apparently picked it up. Roma 2.0?
