This film, "Da 5 Bloods" has the potential to be one of his very best and I haven't liked anything the dude has made for a long time.
An interesting premise, great cast, for Netflix so he'll have plenty of room to do what he wants - .......if there's a problem it's where it always is with Spike - he insists on writing and this one has 4 credited screenwriters never a good sign to start with.
Have to admit I'm more curious about this movie and what he's delivering here than much I've heard of for 2020 tbh.....

Maybe this is a good date because there's no competition right now, but as an Oscar hopeful this seems too early to me though especially since there's not festivals or box office returns to help drive the publicity of it.
Maybe I'm wrong though.
ETA: I just noticed the poster, lol, because I'm slow like that. I really like it, but still that release date. I wonder if voters will have really short memories this year because of everything going on and just go with mostly whatever is released at the end of the year. Of course, that often happens now, but I could see it being worse since there weren't really any true Oscar hopefuls early on, and then we had months with no new movies.

That's a shockingly disappointing date on paper - the most wtf since the Denzel Washington/Rami Malek movie being pushed to 2021 a year outside of that date (already finished but announced in early 2020)......I've told people on here that my friend saw it and so did iheartamyadams in this thread and both raved it - which is a big thing to me because I'm not a Spike fan much. The Netflix formula is to save pics for season ending runs momentum - this is at best a total re-think of their standard formula in the year where they have a big advantage over other studios too. Curious to say the least.....

I feel like part of why Oscar voters have such short memories and favor end-of-year releases has to do with them being busy throughout the year only to then rush through at the end to fulfill awards obligation. May not be the case so much if they're stuck in quarantine, but we'll see.

I love the release date - the sooner we get to see the new Spike joint, the better.

I think what the release date shows, as I mentioned in another thread, is that Netflix has bigger priorities come awards season. Not neccesarily. Broadcasters, studios and streaming networks are pushing things forward or moving things back for a variety of strategic reasons. The Undoing was orginally slotted into an Emmy friendly release date, but was pushed back to a Fall premiere because HBO figured out they would be short on new content in the Fall because of production shutdown. The Last Dance (the ESPN Michael Jordan documentary) was not supposed to release so early, but the powers that be saw the potential to gain a huge captive audience because of lockdown and it's paid off massively. The documentary has become far bigger than it probably would have been because the release dates were brought forward. I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if pushing the release date forward was Lee's idea. That maybe there is an opportunity, with a lack of high calibre film content being released right now, for his movie to gain a similar zeitgiest effect to The Last Dance, where it becomes a film everyone is talking about. Instead of waiting to become a casualty of the sheer glut of releases that will come out between September and December, many of which people will never bother to see, because so many delayed releases will be thrown in the mix. It could be in effect, a strategically brilliant move. By releasing in Summer, Da 5 Bloods won't get lost in the bloodbath shuffle of everyone packing their films out in the 4th quarter.

Spike doesn't care about Oscar friendly release dates. He wants the date to serve a purpose. He did the same thing with Blackkklansman.

I like the summer release because it won't be lost in the glut of all the Oscar hopeful movies coming out in Nov-Dec and with the uncertainty of movie theaters being open if a second wave of Covid-19 hits along with flu season, since the film has been completed for awhile, might as well take advantage while everyone is stuck at home and there's no sports right now. It paid off huge for The Last Dance and could be beneficial for Da 5 Bloods as well.

Who knows what will happen come fall. Oscar movies usually don't release until October anyway so all could be okay during that time period. However, these studios need to figure out what to do cause the release deadline is Nov 1st.

To add to what pupdurcs , and sirchuck23 said, being released in June doesn't necessarily mean that Netflix isn't prioritizing the film for a huge Oscar campaign. If anything it could be an alternate way to promote the film. Not to mention that Covid changes everything completely. Many Oscar hopefuls that were planned for release in November / December are being shoved off to the next year due to productions being shut-down, this opens up Da 5 Bloods for a stronger chance to break-in, especially if its really well-received.

Still don't see how this a good move with that release date .........BUT this is from Jeff Wells website today: hmmmmmm very mysterious but this seems highly likely that Da 5 Bloods is what he's talking about........ right?
Without mentioning the title, I saw a serious goodie yesterday — a June release that I can’t discuss for a while yet. The only other 2020 film (a one-off intended for theatrical, I mean) that I’ve admired as much is Roman Polanski’s masterful J’Accuse (aka An Officer and a Spy). I’ll just leave it that.
Edit - Wells denies it's Da 5 Bloods in the comments section now but .......

Edit - Wells denies it's Da 5 Bloods in the comments section now but ....... Thierry Fremaux talks Cannes 2020 Official Selection plans, saving cinema, and Spike Lee's return (exclusive)Fremaux liked it, but of course it's not like he's going to say anything bad. He also mentions that The French Dispatch, Three Stories, and Soul are also fantastic.

I'm always up for a new Spike Lee joint and I have Netflix so definitely looking forward to this shit.
On a side note, I saw a recent pic & video of Chadwick Boseman and is he doing alright? Looks kinda sickly . I wish him well

How great it is to see Delroy Lindo back in front of Spike Lee's camera ? Dude is a brillant, underrated character actor, love him, especially in X and Clockers, he has a stunning on-screen presence. I expect great things from him in this new Joint.
