Cinematography is giving me Chivo vibes. Love it.

With what's going on right now, this could do well. A lot of people are buying RVs.

Oh honey, clearly not set in The Great Depression... I thought it was going to be a period piece and was I looking forward to something very Dorothea Lange - which Fran would be perfect for...
I'll still watch... I'd watch her in anything... even in the grocery store.

I get the feeling that this will be a very fine film in the vein of "The Rider" again.

hopefully this will be good. on paper i SHOULD like chloe zhao's films, but so far her couple of films feel like a much lesser version of what malick and kelly reichardt have done before (and better).

NOMADLAND: Frances McDormand, holy hell. A gut-punch of a performance in a film that just might be as good as the entire film industry had hoped for. Ultimately about the power, and pain, of “having nothing in your way.” And all my fellow Stratharin stans, this is for us. #TIFF20

Nah, and Mank is still the frontrunner for Picture and Directing.

Nah, and Mank is still the frontrunner for Picture and Directing. There is no such thing as a front runner that hasn’t been screened yet. The last time a film that was considered a front runner before people actually saw it win best Picture was Return of the King.

Nah, and Mank is still the frontrunner for Picture and Directing. Mank is only the frontrunner because of pedigree. I'm still not buying it.

Hopefully this huge award and her Marvel gig mean that Zhao gets to make whatever she wants in the upcoming years. The Rider was terrific and I'm very much looking forward to the next phases of her career.

Nah, and Mank is still the frontrunner for Picture and Directing. A movie about old Hollywood featuring an all-white cast and no socially 'important' themes is most definitely not winning the big one this year. I feel that the zeitgeist component will be the most important one at the Oscars this year. It's been like this in the last few years anyway.

Nomadland won the top prize (the Golden Lion) at the Venice Film Festival.

Especially with the Academy clearly pushing for more 'woke' winners.

Nomadland at the end of the day stars a white woman, so i don't see Mank's cast as being a problem for wins in the major categories.

They routinely get nominated but a win is a whole other deal these days. Especially with the Academy clearly pushing for more 'woke' winners. Birdman in 2014 was a movie about acting, although not about Hollywood. The Artist in 2011 was the last such BP winner. But the fact is Hollywood loves this kind of movies. It's ridiculously early to guess, but if I had to, I'd say Mank has better chances than Nomadland.

Which is why stuff like La La Land and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood failed to win BP although LLL was a total frontrunner on paper. I'm not saying they'll totally ignore Mank - I'm sure it'll get plenty of nominations. But as early as it is, I truly believe that a BP win for it is our of the question in the current climate, ESPECIALLY this year with all the stuff that's been happening. There's no relevance/zeitgeist factor in it at all. Meanwhile, Nomadland is an insanely acclaimed Golden Lion winning film directed by a woman and starring a woman which seems to have resonant themes for these times and seems to be a strong artistic achievement too. It'll have more passion, I have no doubts about that.

Not saying Mank will win BP but... Are the Oscars trying to be politically correct??
I'm not sure about that.
