GET THAT THIRD OSCAR, FRANCES!
On a serious note, sounds extremely promising. Zhao is a fantastic, bracing filmmaker and it sounds very much like something I'd adore, even if it didn't star one of the greatest actresses of the era.

Nice! Just re-watched The Rider this weekend and it jumped up into the top-5. Love FRanny and this idea. I saw that Zhao has an upcoming Marvel film which was disappointing to see. But this has the makings to be great

You think she’s one of the greatest actresses of this era and you don’t like her in Olive Kitteridge?!?!

I can be a big fan of someone and not have to love everything they do. Even Daniel Day-Lewis did Eversmile, NJ.

Will this be a 2019 release? Quite possibly since it's already in post-production. I suppose they could hold it until next year's Sundance though...

This is such great news. First of all, The Rider is a hidden gem (not in this board, but overall). Zhao's sensibilities are so touching, and she directed a new-comer Brady Jandreau into one of the best leading performances of the year: moving, nuanced and so natural. I think her style, and with this plot specially, will fit McDormand's abilities like a glove. This is such an obvious pairing that I wonder why I never saw it coming.

Fox Searchlight already bought it, I see no reason why they should hold it until Sundance instead of surfing the wave of Zhao's hype.

It's my favorite performance by her.

Fran purchased the book rights in 2017... I'm guessing she liked The Rider and reached out to Zhao after that. This thing must have got moving pretty quickly.

The most Oscary Oscarism that ever Oscared. Maybe McDormand’s character will befriend a homeless trans genius played by Eddy Redmayne and they learn from one another ala Green Book.

And Meryl Streep has a supporting role in her flashbacks as the abusive drunken haggard mother (Pretty much what she did in August Osage County).

Where did you see that it's in post-production? on Zhao's Wikipedia page it lists "Nomadland" as already in post. I guess that could be wrong but we do know things are moving quickly and I doubt Fox Searchlight would have bough it sigh unseen. We know it's as least in filming but those first look images could be old. I think a 2019 release seems about right. At least a festival run in the fall perhaps. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlo%C3%A9_Zhao#Upcoming_projects

The most Oscary Oscarism that ever Oscared. Oh yeah, if there's anything that the Oscars love it's a film directed by a POC female staring a 60+ year-old woman.
