It’s about a woman in her 60s who ends up losing everything in the Great Depression embarks on a journey through the American West as a van dwelling nomad. Fox Searchlight just acquired it. Wow this looks promising. I loved The Rider.
Nice! Just re-watched The Rider this weekend and it jumped up into the top-5. Love FRanny and this idea. I saw that Zhao has an upcoming Marvel film which was disappointing to see. But this has the makings to be great
This is such great news. First of all, The Rider is a hidden gem (not in this board, but overall). Zhao's sensibilities are so touching, and she directed a new-comer Brady Jandreau into one of the best leading performances of the year: moving, nuanced and so natural. I think her style, and with this plot specially, will fit McDormand's abilities like a glove. This is such an obvious pairing that I wonder why I never saw it coming.
Quite possibly since it's already in post-production. I suppose they could hold it until next year's Sundance though...
Where did you see that it's in post-production?
on Zhao's Wikipedia page it lists "Nomadland" as already in post. I guess that could be wrong but we do know things are moving quickly and I doubt Fox Searchlight would have bough it sigh unseen. We know it's as least in filming but those first look images could be old. I think a 2019 release seems about right. At least a festival run in the fall perhaps.
