It's so languid, sexy, and hypnotic... A personal favorite of mine.

Love the film but mostly because I love this period of French cinema, this genre in general and this stupendous cast. A special mention to the great Maurice Ronet star of Malle's lacerating The Fire Within and Purple Noon. La Piscine is slow moving when you first see it (to me anyway) but if you give it a re-watch it's rather very precise and every minute sort of builds to the cumulative effect - it's very representative of its time and this era and really stands up to repeat viewings. I love this specific period - ie the movies in this period weren't like Breathless or Shoot The Piano Player which were quite clearly young man's films - these were middle aged films (and often if you think of it women's films in a way) of an almost sinister middle aged malaise - which is uncannily on target across cultures too. This period, dominated imo by my beloved Chabrol - who unleashed an amazing streak of 5 great movies in a row (sort of) like this in 1968-1971. It is somewhat like the French version of an upper middle class soap opera - but playing off the ideas of wealth, control (and who has it), sexuality, youth/aging, privilege, gender dynamics. Knife In The Water is also a crucial influence but of course La Piscine ups the ante on what it can show you with characters interacting, lush settings and really beautiful people in a way that well only the French can

I just love reading your thoughts.

Does anyone have a HD link to this one? All I can find are shitty quality ones and it's not on Amazon Prime.

Oddly, Jane Birkin was sexier than Romy Schneider. Ditto for Ronet over Delon.
