Oh this hits hard. I was literally googling him yesterday because I wanted to see what he was up to Don't Google me. Ever.

He certainly will be missed. Such a fantastic and versatile actor, who could basically take on every role. You just have to mention Tom Jones, Under the Volcano, Erin Brockovich and have three great and totally different performances. But I myself will in first place always remember him as THE perfect Hercule Poirot.
RIP

Because Mattsby has mentioned Stephen Frears being part of Finney's directorial debut, so was Finney part of that of Frears: Gumshoe, a little bit forgotten today, but definitely worth seeking out. Nice vibe and you can't quite categorize it really. An interesting film and a testament to Finney's versatility.

Definitely not a lot of people's favorite movie around these parts, but I like to think of this line from him (despite his many great performances, this is the one I immediately thought of when I saw that he died).
(at :54 if the video doesn't immediately start there)

For anyone who's interested, after tonight's BAFTAs on BBC1, they're showing A Man of No Importance in remembrance of Finney. The movie itself is not that special, but it's good and delightful, and Finney is charming and, as always, a pure pleasure to watch.

Love this film and the performance - as I mentioned in my earlier post it really helps if you see this in conjunction with his other 1994 performance in The Browning Version - an astonishing 1-2 punch where nothing is repeated from role to role. He's absolutely fearless here, the film paints a happy face on some dark material, but the scenes he has with Brenda Fricker as his sister are so delicate as to be a master class. One of my favorite things is for an actor to appear to be doing nothing but doing little things within it that "nothing" that are true to character and reveal him - the scene in this film were Finney simply dresses to go out - it's a big scene - is a tragedy painted in a thousand small strokes.

RIP - One of the great actors ever - I can tell you that in our great actors poll only Olivier ranked higher for me for UK actors and he was a curveball among all actors - you often didn't know what to make of his performances unless you went back and revisited him and rethought it and reconsidered it. He never changed - you did, he challenged perceptions and conformity in his choices and your expectations. In 1994 he gave 2 astonishingly different performances in The Browning Version and A Man Of No Importance and got nodded for nothing - that's how much the awards bodies ever matter btw. I would recommend that people who don't know him start there because in that year he was entirely a baffling genius - he was greater before of course but when I think of him, I think of him there. Sly old fox he was. RIP champ - 2 years gone now.........Feb 7, 2019

I saw this and thought that 2021 was so vicious to the old legends it killed Albert Finney again.

Wanna add that on the first page I mention I hadn't seen Night Must Fall - well, I've since seen it three times. Also, since, I watched for the first time: the wonderful Scrooge, the brilliant Two for the Road, and The Gathering Storm. Not to mention a bunch of rewatches of other stuff. And he was already in my Top 5 actors before these. What a talent.
