Dark Souls 3....probably not the best game to playing in such a time. I know this series has a reputation of being difficult since I’ve played earlier iterations of it, but there’s being hard to beat and then there’s blatant ridiculous cheating which you can do absolutely fuck all about except bend over and take it. I’ve somehow managed to not break my controller or my monitor yet....probably because it would take 3 months to get new ones. Tough but fair game... Git gud reported

Finished The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay yesterday. Pretty awesome game and far too good for a movie tie-in.

I know that Dark Souls 2 pissed me off for the same reason, to the point that I didn't last more than a few hours before deciding that drinking bleach would be more pleasurable. The original DS is a masterpiece, though.

I just started BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. I haven't played a fighting game in well over a decade, and now I'm remembering why. The game doesn't seem bad at all, but there is waaaaaay more strategy and learning required than I'm willing to invest. This looks like a lot of memorization of combos and special attacks. Only played two characters so far, and both (Tager and Litchi) were reasonably fun, but I can't see myself devoting the energy to the rote memorization involved.
Also, my thumbs hurt. So, so much.

So I'm finally playing Final Fantasy IX for the first time on my PS4... and this might be my favourite Final Fantasy (though it's hard to beat VI, VII or X) ... It's marvelous, way ahead of its time, rich characters, great storytelling, overall great fun

I finished Resident Evil 4 (the PS4 remaster, that is), which I think might've become one of my new favorite games. Kind of reminded me of a John Carpenter movie, but with the camp turned up off-the-charts. It was gloriously ridiculous and over-the-top, and so addictively fun, so intense and gory and also quite genuinely scary too. The story drags a bit in the middle ( two whole chapters in the castle was a bit much), but I meeeean, this isn't exactly a "story" game and if I start nitpicking the narrative, the situation, etc. that digs up all sorts of problems -- as a piece of unforgivingly cheesy and absurd entertainment, it's just delightful.

I finished the wonderful Uncharted series. Here are my quick mini-reviews of each game.
Drake's Fortune: Hasn't really aged well. Some gameplay mechanics made it pretty obvious that it's a 2007 game, but this is still a good start. The characters were the best part about it. So much personality!
Among Thieves: Ummm... one of the best games ever? A gigantic improvement to 1 in every fcking way. The narrative was much tighter, the pacing was razor-sharp, and the action set pieces (THAT TRAIN CHASE!) were better pieced together. Chloe and that shithead Flynn are probably my favorite characters in the whole series. Lazarevic was a fun villain too.
Drake's Deception: Not as good as 2. The pacing and tone were a bit all over the place and the villains kinda sucked. I did like that there was a lot more character development for Drake this time, with everyone questioning why he's so obsessed with solving this mystery and whether it's worth putting everyone around him in danger. It also has the best melee combat in the series, countering and environmental finishers feel so damn satisfying.
Golden Abyss: Nothing mindblowing but it was fun for a handheld game. Felt a little gimmicky at times.
A Thief's End: I had some issues with the story and felt the last act stumbled a bit, but overall it was still a great game and an incredibly satisfying end to the series. It really shows the power of developing a cast of characters whose fates you care about, as well as a series knowing how to go out on a high note rather than overstay its welcome. I'm gonna miss Nate and the gang.
Will play Lost Legacy soon. Please tell me Cutter makes an appearance.

Well, I tried Dark Souls 2 again. Thought that maybe I gave it short shrift before, maybe it isn't as damned cheap as I remembered...
And then I got ganked by two hammer wielding turtle dudes trying to leave a bonfire. Seriously, I walk out of the bonfire and it sets off aggro on two turtle enemies. Ganks in DS1 were limited to hordes of super easy enemies (who could be hard when you're faced with multiple) or a couple of tougher enemies. (Also the Anor Londo archers and the Capra Demon, but those are just two examples.) In this game, it's throwing ridiculously overpowered enemies at me with ridiculous aggro ranges, impossibly wide swings, and terribly small fighting zones. And then sending them two or three at a time.
Don't get me started on hitboxes or the damned adaptability stat.
Yeah, I'm done. Again. I lasted for around eight hours, which is twice as long as my first playthrough. This is garbage.

Martin Stett I don’t know how people find the patience for these games. Maybe I just need to “git gud,” but I played Bloodborne for two hours, and it was so fucking punishing.

Martin Stett I don’t know how people find the patience for these games. Maybe I just need to “git gud,” but I played Bloodborne for two hours, and it was so fucking punishing. I've played Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2. Demon's is fun, and only really difficult if you don't understand upgrades. Dark Souls is a masterpiece. The encounters are developed in such a way that every new enemy presents a challenge that seems insurmountable... until you come back four hours later and breeze through every enemy because the game has taught you how to handle yourself. Also, every play style is viable: heavy armor and gigantic sword, fast paced thief, mages, clerics, you can be any of these and still be successful. Add on top of that the amazing map design (a key part of the game's immersion) and you've got a classic on your hands. Dark Souls 2 is shit. The only positive I can think of is that it gave me the option to stick a silly mustache on my character.

Star Wars: Fallen Order.
So far, this game is an absolute mindblowing visual spectacle.
Sadly, I do not want to play a Star Wars game where I'm swinging on vines, and spend half of my time climbing up the sides of buildings/rockfaces. Throw in the fact that it's been a whopping one chapter and I called out two major plot points before their reveal.

Shovel Knight. Annoying and unfunny atmosphere, repetitive music, unresponsive controls. If the controls didn't suck and the bright colors didn't make me want to tear my eyes out and the screen didn't just turn black because "difficulty!!!" this would be enjoyable. But after the super easy opening stage (as opening stages should be) this game just gets silly with all sorts of trial and error bullshit of the screen only showing up for a tenth of a second while enemies try to kill you, or precise jumping maneuvers that you can't study because platforms will send you to your death without instant movement.
Yeah. Not my thing. I don't mind well made 2d sidescroller combat (hello, Iji!), but this is anything but well made.

Played through a couple short games in the past few days...
Limbo: Not quite as good as Inside, though I thought it might be for the first half ... then the tasks get kind of annoying towards the back stretch that ruins the flow of the game a bit. Still, the atmosphere of course is impeccable, the design of it is great, such an eerie, at times etherial mood to it ... and the very light storyline still feels rich with meaning. Can't wait for whatever Playdead gives us next.
What Remains of Edith Finch: Maybe one of my new favorite games, at least as far as indie games go. The gameplay is insanely creative to me -- sure, maybe not at all "challenging" (can you actually fail in this game?) and I'm sure more legit "gamers" than me scoff at something like this -- but every segment of gameplay is so distinct from the others and so enthralling and immersive in its own right. Genuinely experienced so many "holy shit" breathtaking moments throughout this. The narrative itself is a wonder, rich with its own mythology, atmosphere, etc. I just loved this story so much; very novelistic in a way which is rare to see in this medium. And the fact that it's only like a 2-hour playtime makes it feel more like a movie that I just can back and rewatch over and over again.

Can't complain too much since I got the game SUPER cheap on a Steam sale... but still how many fucking blocks do you want me to drag at .25 speed?

It's more like an interactive novel than a hack & slash game (there are only a few, quite easy, fights), but the story is probably the best and most unique of any video game (only Mask Of The Betrayer comes close). It's probably my favourite game ever. It's first act is quite bizzare however and it takes a while for things to straighten out. But, also, reading massive walls of text on your PC screen can be quite tiresome as well. Anyway, if you play it to the very end, I'm sure you won't regret it.

Everybody and their mother has fifty thousand words to tell me, and none of it matters. I'll hold out (it's an easy investment that isn't very challenging) in hopes that this will get moving.

Throw in the fact that it's been a whopping one chapter and I called out two major plot points before their reveal. Yeah, played this one a little while back, pretty much right at the beginning of quarantine and it became a bit of a chore as the game wore on. I didn't mind that it pretty much stole Uncharted's mechanics and gameplay style, it's kind of what I'd love from a Star Wars game to be very IN the action, but the biggest issue for me was how BORING every single character was. If they were hoping to imitate George Lucas, they succeeded in terms of boring, lifeless dialogue and very low stakes. Also the boss battles were tough as shit. The world-building, however, was gorgeous and certainly one of the prettiest games I've played. I think it's a great start for a Star Wars game like this and now just need to expand it (I was sad we only got to travel to like 4 or 5 planets) and also create a much more interesting lead and plot.

Currently re-playing the Sly Cooper series with the girlfriend. On #2 at the moment.
Used to love these A LOT when I was younger, especially remember digging the second one because you got to explore each world a bit more than the first game, but also feels like a lot of rinse-repeat every chapter compared to the first game. Still creative and interesting games, but think I wish there was a bit more variety. The one plus is getting the opportunity to play as each of the three characters, even if I tend to prefer Sly since he's actually able to do more in the game.

I started Dragon Age: Inquisition a few days ago. The tactical camera is complete crap and makes the game unplayable, so I had to play this as an action rpg instead, which was a bit frustrating at first, but I'm getting used to it. The game so far is pretty meh. It started out really well, but I'm in this Hinterlands area for several hours now and it's extremely dull.
