Dunno whether the movie will be great or not (my ancitipation certainly isn't affected by the slightly restrained praise) but shit like this is for me the real proof of why American film criticism has massively deteriorated in the last couple of years: Too 'archaically male' for 'these times', you see

Yeah, so far this seems pretty similar to the kind of reception that Inception and Interstellar got, which is not surprising. I was maybe hoping for slightly better reviews than Inception, but anyone expecting what's basically a James Bond movie with a mind-bending sci-fi twist to receive critical acclaim akin to Dunkirk was sort of kidding themselves. My own expectations haven't really changed based on what I've read so far.
And I'm not sure it's really fair to call Dunkirk a "diversion" when we have no idea what Nolan will do in the future, so we shouldn't assume that it will become some singular anomalous thing among his big-budget films.

As far as I know, only Metacritic has a slightly low rating atm. RT is fine and getting better and better while the reviews are mixed.
But let's be honest: We talking about a Nolan movie. Reviews WILL be mixed anyhow.
Anyway, I'm probably seeing this Wednesday or Thursday so I'll see for my own.

Could get a 0% rating on RT & I'll still be seeing it in IMAX opening weekend.

i'm still marginally excited for this, but this quote from the indiewire review pricked up my ears for the wrong reasons:sounds like how i describe Dunkirk anyways, i don't need this to be a masterpiece. i was never as excited for this as i was for other stuff coming out this fall (and stuff that was supposed to come out), but at this point i'll take what i can get. if anything could drive me into the arms of nolan, it's the shittiness that has been 2020. plus there's always mulan.

Didn’t know TENET was supposed to be a comedy.

Also, one thing I appreciate that multiple reviews have acknowledged is the abundant dapper suit porn in the film (which this latest trailer showcases).

All the reviews make it sound like lesser Inception, which is about what I expected. But I'm one of those people who thinks Inception is Nolan's masterpiece, so that doesn't deter me one bit.

I just read two more reviews (in Greek) that say pretty much the same things (impressive but incomprehensible and blah blah blah) and totally humorless!!! WTF??? Has everybody been so much affected by these Marvel movies that believes humor is as essential to a film as the script??

Lubezki Some men just want to watch Nolan fail. We should ignore them. Or maybe he's just a bland showman 'director'

That last trailer might be one of the greatest trailers. Include that with The Plan being a great song, I’m fucking hyped. Can’t wait to see this.
I remember there was a decent bit of talk about Inception being humourless, so I could really care less about the reviews saying that.

Talking about humorless Nolan films, to me is more about the seriousness of it all, saw Inception once again recently and I keep giggling at the dialogue and thinking the "seriousness" makes it one of the silliest movies ever made.... and yet I like Interstellar a lot more because of its adult and novelistic ambition, which was the most impressive cinema experience of that year for me.
Based on that, Tenet is by default the most anticipated film of the year for me, still I think I'm gonna pass for obvious reasons...

Has everybody been so much affected by these Marvel movies that believes humor is as essential to a film as the script?? I thought Memento was a barrel of laughs.. Leonard: "Look I have this condition...." Natalie: "Yeah I know all about your fucking condition Leonard..probably know more about it than you do." Don't really understand the humorless criticisms, but sounds like this film is in the vein of Inception so I'll be curious to see what Nolan cooked up (probably requires multiple viewings) and how JDW does when it comes on VOD.

Guys I don’t think “humorless” means not funny. I think they mean it’s joyless.

I think it's an example of the word "humorless" substituting for "pretentious" that's how I think it's meant to be taken. I personally can't wait to see this film but to me that sort of "letting the air out of your story" has become less and less as Nolan has gone on. His first 3 films (my 3 favorite Following/Memento/Insomnia) are almost dark jokes in just their plot outlines - even Insomnia (he can't sleep, it's because of circumstances........and not!) and Memento especially had a great humor to it (renting Leonard a room multiple times, the spitting in the beer etc.). It's just less present in his films than it once was and it's pretty clear imo........I like every movie he's ever made (barely in the case of Interstellar) but as he's become a fantasist - or explored that side of himself more, that smirking humor is much more subdued than it was when he was the new Hitchcock early on.

Guys I don’t think “humorless” means not funny. I think they mean it’s joyless. I still don't get it. The last "joyful" film I've seen is something like Sing Street. I felt more joy watching the docking scene in Interstellar alone than in the last few PTA films.

Yeah, Teddy also has some great lines at Leonard's expense: "You know, I've had more rewarding friendships than this one. Although I do get to keep telling the same jokes." And one line in Following that always makes me laugh out loud: "Just because you break into people's homes doesn't mean you have to look like a burglar" or something to that effect.
