Okay, but, the fact that the "Unforgettable" scene is so "clean" and "pristine" is its exact problem. That...that's my point. It doesn't make sense.

9. Not Nine, but 9. There's a difference. 9 is better (although the script is as flimsy as wet tissue paper). not choreography-wise Agree to disagree, I suppose. I thought Nine had lackluster choreography, and 9 made every chase scene thrilling and fairly terrifying.

Okay, but, the fact that the "Unforgettable" scene is so "clean" and "pristine" is its exact problem. That...that's my point. It doesn't make sense. Look, I know that fans of the graphic novel deride Snyder for shooting the film the way he did, but that doesn't change the fact that the sequence is well-shot and staged. You can argue it misses the spirit of the novel (I'd actually argue that -- shocker! -- it improves upon the source material in many aspects, even if it falls short in others), but the work itself is strong on a technical level.

pendragon or somebody shoot me a message a day or two before to remind me to do this. Too busy at the moment, but I love this year and want to weigh in. Thanks.

IMHO Watchmen deserves to make choreography for "Unforgettable" if nothing else. I don't care for the movie much but that action scene is so much cleaner and more interesting than anything Marvel's ever produced. It's a fantastic scene. The thing that irks me about that specific scene though is, because of the intentionally darkened lighting, it makes it kind of tough to decipher, and stands out in a bad way next to the other set-pieces. The color in the whole movie is muted, sure, but the rest of the action is cleaner and not nearly so murky. I’d argue the prison riot was a stronger showcase.

I really wanted to watch Vengeance and Yatterman, but I'm not paying for them, and my library and Amazon have failed me. Alas.

so having seen I Killed My Mother, I'll drop a quick FYC for the lovely Anne Dorval. Pretty forgettable movie overall though. Mostly it's the kind of pretentious angsty naval-gazing we've come to expect from Dolan, and he was 20 in 2009 so it's even worse. But Dorval is wonderful.
Also having rewatched Dogtooth, I hope it gets in for screenplay and director at least. Deliciously nasty parable on parenting.
Also caught About Elly which was fine. I'm glad I've finally seen it but I don't think Farhadi is for me. Of course I still need to see A Separation and The Salesman but a criticism that seems to follow him around is that the interpersonal conflicts in his films can tend towards melodrama and so far that's been the case in my experience, though it's much worse in The Past than in About Elly. Actually my favorite portion of the film was the slice-of-life depiction of this group vacation in the first act. It's the kind of stark naturalistic filmmaking with an eye for detail that I enjoy, but when there's a crisis and people's true colors start to show the film starts feeling contrived and ultimately kind of slight, with an anti-climactic and literalistic ending.
I don't mean to rag on the film. It's quite good and the ensemble performance is rock solid. I just find the melodrama distracting. It's so noticeable, and it seems to be the narrative device Farhadi uses most often to convey his characters' inner lives. They only reveal anything about themselves during moments of high stress and in tears.

Tommen_Saperstein, I will forgive your transgression* if I can at least depend on your vote for Farahani. * Nah, you’re ok. Sorry it didn’t click with you.

just caught City of Life and Death and....ooof. That was hard to watch. Definitely deserves consideration in the tech departments, particularly cinematography, choreography and sound (mixing and editing but mostly mixing). Tour de force directing too. It's a pretty devastating experience. One of my new favorites for the year.

I'm pushing this back a few days. It'll be easier on me for the presentation and give people a little more time. Hopefully, everyone's just waiting until the last minute to submit.

I intended to squeeze in 2 - 4 more 2009 watches over the weekend and vote on Monday, so now I might be able to get 4 or more in.

I also think Hideo Nakaizumi deserves some Best Supporting Actor consideration.

FYC: This for best original screenplay. And best picture while we're at it. More to come. I just wanted to let all ya honky motherfuckers know what's up. Thank you for pointing out this films existence to me. I just watched it and I haven't laughed so much a film in a long, long time.

Based on what gets nominated I will use the winners voting period to catch up some more on 2009, so you all better have nominated some great films I haven't seen.

Let us not forget:
Shohreh Aghdashloo, The Stoning of Soraya M. Noomi Rapace, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Sharlto Copley, District 9 Ed Asner, Up Katie Jarvis/Fassbender, Fish Tank
And I almost feel brainwashed by all this Goldfish Ferrarri buzz to plug her, even though I've not even seen her film.

Ballot incoming. I didn't fill out a full five for some categories (original song wound up with two, as all of the others are just ). But I've got a ballot. Rewatched so many favorites, and so many favorites dropped off of my BP ballot.
