Ponyo is '08. You had better bet that anything from Hisaishi is making my lineup, but this was '08 in Japan.

Since she’s gonna be voted Lead pretty soon, now would be a good time to consider... Golshifteh Farahani in About Elly.
And while you’re at it, show some love for Taraneh Alidoosti in Supporting Actress as well.
Just don’t forget this movie.

I just rewatched The Merry Gentleman, and old favorite of mine. It was my #3 and it's gonna drop a bit (there are some problems with the sideplots), but it's still a gently beautiful little movie and y'all should give it a shot. It's on Amazon Prime, and the two stars (Michael Keaton and a wonderful Kelly Macdonald) would at least be considered for awards in a perfect world. Also one of the best Christmas films ever. Just don't watch the trailer, it spoils the entire movie. Edit: And it's on Youtube! In 240p. Edit again: And it's ever so slightly sped up; it's around five minutes shorter than it should be, and the full credits are in there. Edit again: And it's dubbed into some other language. I reeeeeally oughta do some quality checks on this stuff.

The results of Lead vs. Supporting thread. Remember these are in no way telling you how to vote, you can still vote how you please. It's just to get a gauge on how we'll end up voting so you can tweak your own lineups to help your wanted nominee
Lead Zooey Deschanel, (500) Days of Summer (6-0) Golshifteh Farahani, About Elly (5-0) Angeliki Papoulia, Dogtooth (4-3) Melanie Laurent, Inglourious Basterds (6-3) Kodi Smit-McPhee, The Road (5-0)
Supporting Peter Sarsgaard, An Education (1-6) Anthony Mackie, The Hurt Locker (1-7) Brad Pitt, Inglourious Basterds (2-7) Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds (1-8) Peter Capaldi, In the Loop (0-7) Tom Hollander, In the Loop (2-5) Matt Damon, Invictus (2-4) Woody Harrelson, The Messenger (0-4) Marion Cotillard, Nine (1-5) Helen Mirren, State of Play (0-3) Jackie Earle Haley, Watchmen (1-7) Patrick Wilson, Watchmen (3-5) Rainer Bock, The White Ribbon (0-3) Susanne Lothar, The White Ribbon (0-4)

I'm gonna need labels again. I recognize Watchmen and District 9. Is the top image The Road? And I assume the final one is Bad Lieutenant: PoCNO (because of Nic Cage and the whole thing just looking very Herzogy)

If everyone is looking for more hidden gems from 2009, I'd recommend the following: Puts most Western superhero films to shame.

It's episodic and messy, but the creepy vibe of everything being wrong makes it more frightening than most horror films. Looking at my ballot, it just misses my BP lineup, I'm afraid. P.S. It has the greatest trailer of all time:

If the category wasn't so stacked, I'd recommend Christopher Plummer's amazing voice acting performance in Moon.
