His life was tragic but his beauty was divine.

Oh honey, drug addiction and alcoholism are such terrible things. Poor Monty & Judy (had such parallel lives) were so supremely talented and yet their lives were so tragic.
Happy Birthday, Monty. Hope you are in a better place and at rest.

I watched this earlier in the week and was struck by how Clift is so animated (and comic! - a little like Cary Grant!) in this lovely scene........and I couldn't believe somebody was sharp enough to put this up on Youtube tbh.....is there any other actor that you can isolate on single scenes for and from those scenes you then could suggest a whole other career for besides the (great) one he actually had?

Sean Penn in Fast Times at Ridgemont High...nothing else he has done in his career is remotely anything like Jeff Spicoli. Take any scene from that movie and one from any other and it's difficult to process this is the same guy. The Search was filmed after Red River, but released first due to Howard Hughes being a pain in the ass with the latter. It was the first glimpse of Clift audiences got and, you're right, very different from the types of characters he'd go on to be associated with (though his character in The Big Lift bears some resemblances, and there is some lighthearted, playful content there.) It was deserved, but I'm always surprised he copped a nomination for this. What were your thoughts on the overall movie?

Absolutely magical performer and unparalleled screen presence. He's probably the most modern actor of the golden age.

I talk a lot on here about how Hollywood rarely now makes movies in which contemporary settings are used to great effect - ie Hollywood would rather make movies now about production design - what the world was or will some day be - instead of what it is right now ..........The Search is a pretty good example of the opposite - the audience recognized something "right now" that can be used symbolically and dramatically - recognizably on multiple levels............The Search is a much better movie for being made when it was made rather than a few years later I think.........it "feels" rght and is played in a way that is far more seemingly natural .........

just watched Young Lions (1958) yesterday and really loved the performances, especially Brando and Clift. Unlike any other war film I've seen from this era. Packs in so much plot in 160 minutes and covers the whole of WWII. Multiple gunfights and tense exchanges but somehow the most riveting scene was near the beginning with a wide-eyed and adorably shy Clift escorting Hope Lange home. He bungles the kiss and she has to save the moment, but just look at the feeling pouring out of his face. Hope for their possible future and adoration mixed with a slight tinge of fear. There's no guile in anything he does. He's an open book and you can read it all on his face. definitely flawed but fascinating movie.

^Check out Lonelyhearts if you haven't...a recent rewatch led me to the conclusion that it's the superior '58 Clift film.
