Been getting into last year's 50th anniversary remaster of Village Green Preservation Society and have been particularly enjoying this, my favorite song on the album (most people would probably take Johnny Thunder or the title track). One of the great things about The Kinks is how they often took cheesy pop music conventions and made them melancholy. Often in the form of jaunty music hall piano riffs, in this song it was with the "la la la" backing vocals, the flugelhorn arrangement, and the weeping harp plucks that come in at the end. A very detailed recording.
On a side note, I usually hate new cover art for reissues, but in this case it's better. The psychedelic cover with the red glare never went with the content of the album for me, it looked like it belonged to a heavy psych rock album by someone like Hendrix or The Doors. The regal blue color and gold lettering fit much better.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of Brian Wilson. He had essentially a two year stint as a pop genius with Pet Sounds in 66 and the Smile songs in 67. That's why I'm reluctant to mention him alongside the top tier guys in his era like Lennon, Jagger/Richards, or Ray Davies. Before that he was a good pop melodist and vocal arranger and afterward he'd only write the occasional great song like Love and Mercy or this.
Like what I've talked about in regards to Kinks songs, this song musically shouldn't be downbeat. It's a mid-tempo keyboard driven pop song with lush harmonies. But it captures this weird dissonance where those elements of the song feel like a deliberate pose hiding the sadness underneath. Then of course there's the lyrics, which are probably the best of any Beach Boys song, even Van Dyke Parks' contributions to Smile. This is one of the few songs to which Brian wrote the lyrics, and I think it demonstrates that his feeling the need to usually work with a lyricist for his songs either came out of insecurity or an unwillingness to share how he really felt. On a related note, I used to mishear the lyrics as "These things I'll hear until I die" instead of "be", which made me think the song was about the voices in Brian's head, which just made it sadder.
Not a song a lot of people talk about because it's buried as an album track on the underrated album Surf's Up, but I'd seriously consider this for the top five Beach Boys songs.

Most of the rave Random Access Memories reviews were going on about Get Lucky and the big singles, but this is the best track on the album and one of the best songs of the decade. It covers so many different things, the weird electronic opening, 70's style soft rock, disco, and then the Beatlesesq (both in terms of melody and lyrical content) fadeout with a choir and dissonant strings. And it all comes together seamlessly. When Daft Punk are on their game they can be genre transcending artists.
