The first hour or so of this is bloody good, and everything from when Emily Blunt shows up, until the three kids leave the tent and engage in that awful carriage chase, is practically perfect in every way (sorry). Unfortunately, then the second half of the film kicks in and it jumps back and forth between the quality of the first half, right through the gamut to occasionally outright bad. Still, the first half, and the flashes of excellence in the second, more than make up for these slides in mediocrity. I can also forgive the fact that the lazy plot of this film could have been outlined on the back of a book of matches, because those animated set pieces in the first half, along with Blunt and Miranda, were just enough to hold it all together. 7.5/10
