His best record and it set up a weird vibe in American music in the fruitful period that followed immediately after it's release - young American males - Bob Mould, Michael Stipe, Paul Westerberg, Grant Hart all great figures in American music history - saw their lives like what Springsteen conveyed here:

No jobs, diminished opportunities, a bleak future, the American Dream turned inside out . Those young guys articulated their worldview in their own ways but Springsteen on Nebraska provided a less obvious touchstone for those kids like them not from NY or LA. The middle of America moreso Nebraska than Jersey, so vast, so empty, so metaphorical.

State Trooper - the peak here - is one of his best songs songs and his best vocals - those yelps at the end are truly shocking and creepy coming from him.

Atlantic City.

Definitely not my favorite Springsteen record (that's easily The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle) but it has some of his best songwriting. "I guess there's just a meanness in this world."
