Wow, looks like Grinch might overtake Ralph for #1 next weekend. Shame, though, as it looks more soulless. Illumination is really the most consistent in Animation.

Illumination is really the most consistent in Animation. In the worst ways. They’re amazing at making marketable (and relatively inexpensive) films that play to as broad an audience as possible, and you see the rewards they’ve reaped in ticket sales. I just wish those marketable, lucrative, broad-ranged films were... good, and so far, I don’t think they’ve actually made a good movie. I can’t remember who said it, but there was this funny quote that you can picture Illumination laminating their A Cinemascores. And I’m sure their Mario film will do big business (if you can even make a film out of something as abstract as Mario), but likely be as mediocre.

I'm just saying it takes a special kind of power to make movies that never fail to make shitloads of money.

Looks like Aquaman made its first splash in China! I wonder what the first impression is like for it? The DCEU could use another huge critical luck to support its success and new direction (and I don't even hate most of the DCEU so far like a lot of people did). Yeah, animation surprisingly dominates this early in the month and then pretty soon Spiderverse will roll in by the weekend. Good for Creed II and Green Book. The Crimes of Grindelwald is still holding up strong although it's probably just mostly out of completionist sakes for the Potter fandom. It absolutely makes sense at the moment for all of the general audience releases to remain afloat around the holidays. Why the salt? And as far as actual holiday-themed movies go at the moment, you'd think that The Nutcracker and the Four Realms will also last somewhere in the top 10 by now too, and there aren't that many of them.. I was kinda right before to comment how the past two weeks of absent major releases will turn into an interesting one. And I’m sure their Mario film will do big business (if you can even make a film out of something as abstract as Mario), but likely be as mediocre. Even when Miyamoto/Nintendo is said to be heavily involved with this movie and that the movie will be based on his idea? We could at least probably expect this one to turn out better than the first Bob Hoskins attempt.

Even when Miyamoto/Nintendo is said to be heavily involved with this movie and that the movie will be based on his idea? We could at least probably expect this one to turn out better than the first Bob Hoskins attempt. Miyamoto isn’t a movie maker, so I don’t even know if his ideas will integrate well with a movie. If it were someone like Kojima, a huge film buff with his roots in heavy storytelling, I’d be more intrigued. But furthermore, I don’t get how you can even make a decent Mario movie, at least not without resorting to the safest, blandest story you can possibly imagine. And disregarding what a nothing Mario is as an actual character, what about him even lends itself to a movie? He jumps on Goombas, hits blocks, travels on a linear path to some castle, that’s it. Nintendo has other properties that have more potential as movies (Fire Emblem, Pokemon, even Splatoon feels more in Illumination’s wheelhouse), but why this out of all of them?
