As a sportsman, person, etc.
Is the man truly a massive douchebag or is he simply misunderstood?

Man is unhappy because he doesn't know he's happy. It's only that.

I haven't followed him in the last decades, but I remember him being sentenced for rape in the same days as a Kennedy family member was accused and declared innocent for the same crime. I guess that not having a senator uncle testifying "before my nephew went out, we were thinking about my brothers John and Bob that night and we were all sad" can affect your chances to be released.

Well as a person he's obviously a POS for a whole range of reasons (convicted of rape, beat his wife, bit a guy's ear off, exc). He was very dominant as a fighter when he was focused, but when you look back on it the only great fighter he ever beat was a 39 year old Larry Holmes. The problem there is that someone else got away with it, not that Tyson went to jail.

Love his fighting style but he always seemed to unravel when facing someone who wasn't scared of him like Buster Douglas, Holyfield and Lennox Lewis. No way does he beat Ali at his peak.
Still one of the most entertaining fighters to watch though.

countjohnDon't get me wrong. I think everyone is entitled to refuse sex whenever they want. But if I were on a date with a big guy with a past of violence who basically grew up without a moral compass, I wouldn't follow him in his hotel room after a night out, just like I wouldn't walk at night in some quarters wearing a Rolex or something. Tyson declared it was consensual sex. Maybe the girl was really a victim. Maybe someone just wanted him out of the competition for some reason.

As a person: he had a very messed up upbringing and life, but that doesn’t excuse his despicable behavior
As a fighter: in his prime he probably had the most devastating punch in the history of the sport. He was such a force to be recorded with for a stretch
In regards to his upcoming fight: I know I certainly wouldn’t step into the ring with him at his current age of 58. His training videos show he’s not a complete washed up has-been so maybe he can compete against Paul and not turn this into a complete mockery. I’ll certainly be rooting for him

i’d say he’s overrated (at least by the general public). at the same time might be underrated by some of the more hardcore boxing fans as well haha. based on his career he’s not a top 10 HW of all time imo (on the cusp so i don’t think it’s egregious to have him in one of those last couple of spots) but you’ll often hear him and ali as being the best (or at the very most the top 5). a lot of his potential was squandered by troubles outside of the ring which is a shame cause in his young 20’s the dude looked like he was going to be a force to be reckon with and was one of the scariest fighters ever with his speed and switch hitting ability.

Tyson benefited a lot from being the premiere name in boxing when it was getting shunned off network TV and was starting to become more niche on PPV. He was the guy who made boxing worth watching for a lot of casuals who had been turned off the sport, so for them the image is mostly of young, dominant Tyson knocking guys out in less than 2 minutes. Once he lost his discipline and was losing fights, there was no reason to keep tuning in and boxing in its cultural relevance faded to the point it is today. If someone said Tyson at his peak was top 5, I could understand that. His combination of knockout power from seemingly any punching angle along with his hand speed and that insane peekaboo technique made him an absolute nightmare to match up against. But Tyson's own mental issues got in the way of his ability to sustain and evolve that peak the way other fighters did (most boxers peak around their later 20s, Tyson peaked at 21 and was in prison for what should've been his prime) so his career doesn't quite stack up with the all-timers.
