Yeah, that card thing made me feel bad for Beatty. Everyone keeps saying how graceful this guy was but no, that was just horrible, he handled everything else well but this is what I will remember from his behavior. Not only is Beatty not entirely at fault here, he is an older guy and an actor who really deserves respect. That was really an awful moment. No, I don't really see it that way. I don't think Horowitz was yanking it as a slight to Beatty at all, look again and you see the stage manager starting to grab it first and that's what Horowitz was immediately reacting to, you can see a brief look of impatience come across his face as it just wasn't getting put up for the cameras. Kimmel's starting to reach too. Horowitz had the mic, he saw the card, he just wanted people to see it ASAP. I do feel bad for Beatty, it really wasn't his fault and he got stuck in the middle of it. But I don't blame Horowitz at all for taking control of the moment even if it meant being a little aggressive. It was going on long enough, nobody else was really doing anything, and they were all embarrassed to still be standing up there.

The Moonlight crowd didn't believe what was happening and the only way for him to prove it was to grab the card.

What made it worse is that La La Land was almost certainly winning anyway- if it did, then it's possible we wouldn't even know about the envelope thing.

People, people, let's stop making excuses for them. They still have their wits about them, it's not like they're both senile. If you open an envelope and read "Emma Stone - La La Land, Actress in a Leading Role" blazoned across it when you're supposed to be announcing the Best Picture winner, then there shouldn't be any doubt that there has been some kind of a mix-up. If it had been me on stage announcing the winner, I probably would have done as Beatty did at first, fumbled around for a bit looking a bit confused, make sure there wasn't another envelope and be absolutely sure that I hadn't missed something, but after that I would have simply stated that it appeared that the wrong envelope had been given to me and called on one of the accountants to come on stage to confirm the error. I would even go so far as to say it was rather irresponsible of Beatty. Not that I mind though, it was great entertainment and it injected some life into a very dull ceremony, albeit right at the very last minute, and will be something that will be remembered for years to come. But really, Beatty should have said something. I don't blame Dunaway too much, she thought he was doing a bit, looked at the envelope, her eyes zoomed in on "La La Land" whilst ignoring everything else and announced it.

My thing is I think Beatty was doing exactly what you said, but he didn't want to leave his partner in the dark and was showing her the error, she just didn't realize that's what he was doing and tried to quickly get it announced. I don't really blame either of them.
