Just one episode in .......didn't see a thread (?). Trying to find something funny to watch now and while I'm not sure this is that exactly, it's pretty agreeably formulaic and comfortable in a nice way. Douglas and Arkin - 2 near Triple Crown winners dontchaknow - are winningly acerbic in this slight piece.
Douglas who I often make fun of is given the kind of stuff he does very well - gently and humorously tweaking his perceived vanity as a star and actor. He also gets to address his acting chops (as an acting teacher no less), so you'll have to suspend disbelief if like me you're bemused by that aspect of him. Still, you'll find echoes of Solitary Man and Wonder Boys for him to draw from and that's the best kind of stuff in his movie work imo so it's all good really.
Episode 1 did a good introduction job, established a believable rapport between the men and the promise of gentle laughs with some occasional pathos - I'll keep watching but if anybody watched more than 1 episode and can encourage or stop me, please feel free.

Halfway through now - 4 of 8. Getting better or at least more comfortable as it goes along - Episode 4 has Douglas' best work so far and Arkin still waiting on a little more shape to his character but getting some ace zingers. Added bonus - at the start of episode 4 Douglas is wearing a hoodie under a beat up sport coat exactly the same colors that I often wear (STFU, it's a fashion choice you bastards - go change your sneakers. Geesh - ). Nothing funnier than when you recognize yourself in a haggard 74 year old. I haven't felt so young in.........oh nevermind.

This made AFI's top ten for TV. Wait, really? It popped up on my Roku and said "From Chuck Lorre" and I was just like, "no thanks!".

Since I'm apparently the only geezer ancient enough to watch this show about these ancient geezers, I'll say that my favorite moment is a sight gag in Michael Douglas' (Kominsky's) office in Episode 7. A theatrical poster of his character (with the skull) as Hamlet (Hamlet!) - later you see a black and white photo of Olivier (with the skull) from the film in his office. What are they saying there - that Kominsky could have been an heir to Olivier? What sea of troubles befell him!?! Maybe....maybe some darker plot point is coming that reveals where it all went wrong...........Now I wish I could tell you THAT'S the kind of balls this show may have but alas, it's pleasures (for now) are more low key. But they are pleasures nonetheless. Catch it while they're alive..........

Haven't seen it yet (which is a phrase I am going to use quite a lot around these boards, I am way behind everything; can't they just stop doing stuff for a couple of years and let me catch up, pleeaaaseee!?) After the first trailer, I was kinda mixed on it, but it is getting good reviews (actually much much better than I had expected), so I am going to give it a try (in the next couple of years 🙄). Glad you like it, pacinoyes. And true, it's totally in Douglas' wheelhouse (and in Arkin's). I'm all for seasoned veterans getting more opportunities now with Netflix and so. And not just in television series of course. (The Irishman, wink wink.) God, Arkin is 84, still looking fine. So, good for them and for everyone else who grew up watching those guys, seeing them working way into old age. Hopefully they also find ways to challenge themselves with this a little bit, pushing the boundaries of what one is expecting of an old geezer sitcom.

Watched the first two episodes... damn Douglas and Arkin are great together!
A bit goofy at times and eye-roll-worthy when genuinely great emotional moments are interrupted by cheap gags... but very watchable and kind of charming so far.
But my main takeaway from the first two episodes... Pacino needs to dump the Nazi series and find someone to write an old man buddy comedy for him to star in with De Niro!!!

Imagine the guest stars.......amazingly no one wants my script...........but I think it's mostly because.........of............punctuation.

Walken will play their kooky landlord who they clash with at first, but quickly becomes a regular at their weekly Pinnacle game.

Martin shitting himself in episode 5 is the hardest I've laughed in a while... And Paul Reiser has been such a great addition this season... he was heartbreaking at the end of the sixth episode. Baumbach should cast him in his next movie.

This was an even better season I think - Arkin's part is beefed up and more rounded and some of Douglas' darker circumstances/impulses are fairly marvelous - the argument he has about "acting" with Allison Janney is like a nasty message board war run amok At only 8 short episodes it's fun and breezy (but also wise) and it doesn't overstay its welcome either.

Finally started watching this late last night. Just a magical series. Never thought I would enjoy it as much as I assumed. It is great to know Douglas won the GG last year, well deserved. Makes me wish Arkin also won it, damn. They are just a perfect match. Also, it was gold seeing Jay Leno & Elliot Gould appear in S1, wow. On S2 now & I am in awe of the storyline so far. Paul Reiser seems to own every scene when I see him.

Well, a bigger part of Kathleen Turner and a bit of Morgan Freeman do it for me.

S3, Ep 1-4
2 more episodes to go.....
Hit or miss funny, really misses Arkin - episode 4 has Barry Levinson and a joke at the Douglas characters expense in the service of DePac which is pretty funny and meta ......not great but some sporadic laughs........
Lots of scenes where the characters laugh and you're supposed to laugh but maybe just smile instead........

The best thing this show had going for it in seasons 1-2 was Arkin and Douglas' hilarious and perfect chemistry together... so season 3 should have been a wash (and it kind of was for the first 3 episodes) but once Kathleen Turner's character gets better established and some good things start happening for Sandy this went back to being sort of wonderful. Turner and Douglas are still amazing together... and Douglas' monologue on death in episode 5 is certainly some of the finest acting of his career.
Definitely could have done without Norman's daughter and Chubby Joel Osment's unnecessary reappearances throughout though. If not for some of the cringe/lame Chuck Lorre humor sprinkled throughout, I would've called this just about a great series overall. I'll still miss it though.
