Loving all those You Were Never Really Here mentions, and shoutout to Mandy getting a cinematography nod. Richly deserved.
Shocked McCarthy missed, though.

McKenzie in supporting, come on.... Utterly brutal fraud to be sure, but at least she got in. Foster was unjustly snubbed.

McKenzie in supporting, come on.... Yeah, even though the studio is pushing her in Supporting, I didn't think award bodies would actually buy that. But hey, happy for her nod.

FIRST REFORMED!!! YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE!!!! HELENA HOWARD!!!!! Love the Jenkins and Carter nods as well, but Hahn was snubbed hard. Also love the healthy amount of Eighth Grade, the cinematography nod for Mandy, and of course Toni Collette.

Even the Indie Spirits ignore Ben Foster, fuck me He won a couple years ago for Hell or High Water, but yeah, if they could squeeze six nominees out of Best Actress (leaving out McCarthy in the bargain), they should've been able to here.

Yeah, I know, but I love this performance too much to see it ignored. I'm afraid the Gothams will be his first and last stop this year.

Wow. You made a good call on YWNRH. My Mad Max of the year, I guess. I don't expect it to garner me any more points this season (unless Ramsay/Phoenix win at BIFA), but ya never know what a third-tier critics' group might do.

So some of the snubs? Willem Dafoe - At Eternity's Gate (Not sure if it counts as International or not) John David Washington, Spike Lee, film - Blackkklansman Ben Foster - Leave no Trace McCarthy's the big one. I think people expected The Wife to do better overall as well. Hereditary, too.

If Laxton had to miss so that Loeb could get in, I'm good with that.

Is First Reformed really that good? No. Hawke is very strong, Seyfried's good and Cedric the Entertainer shows a surprising amount of dramatic chops . . . but it's not a good movie. Preachy doesn't even begin to describe it; it's more of a screed than a screenplay.

Is First Reformed really that good? It's good but once you've seen "Diary of a Country Priest" and "Winter Light", you realize that it ain't that fresh if you know what I mean.

I hated Eighth Grade which mistakes unsubtle, unfunny, very creepy and repetitive mortification of its lead....as realism? No thanks. Nancy and Blame (both debuts) are better. Not to mention Can You Ever Forgive Me. Speaking of which -- how could Melissa McCarthy miss out? And no best feature? That's a headscratcher. Edie Falco is very strong in the not-very-good Outside In and shoulda been nom'd as well.
More on Blame: what's more indie than a 19 year old girl writing, funding with her college savings, producing, starring, directing, and editing a movie and it's actually good...............????? Cassavetes Award missed that one I guess.
But glad First Reformed is getting love, my fav 2018 movie so far.

First Reformed is still my favorite of the year too - the only film I've seen so far that even approached greatness. I mean JangoB had to mention Bresson and Bergman to categorize it as less than fresh and sure I'd agree with that, but I don't have to name films nearly that great to put the overrated "best films" of 2018 in their place too. Sticks with you like no other 2018 film (seen it twice, it improves), a great script (we don't get those at all), by a guy in his 70s who has been lost for a long time now (is somebody going to use the word comeback for Schrader or not?) and by far the performance of Hawke's life. If we're going to write off First Reformed because it's not Winter Light, I may as well just surf the internet for porn all day. I'll be back in a bit...........going to ..........um........to tend to my garden, um, yes, that's it, garden........
