My initial thoughts were going to be that this indeed feels a little too similar to Toy Story 2, but upon reflection I think this could potentially be an interesting choice thematically. Like I wouldn’t be surprised if the film actually highlights the fact that this is a situation that Woody has faced in the past (choosing between his current life and starting fresh). Here though, the stakes are different and I strongly suspect that at the conclusion of this film, we might see Woody actually part ways with the other toys. In Toy Story 2, Woody was still emotionally attached to Andy, who had grown up with Woody but was in the process of outgrowing him. Here, Woody may not be as beholden to Bonnie (outside of returning Forky to her), so he might be more entitled to a life of independence than when he was still with Andy. It would make a lot of sense if this film basically inverted the dramatic trajectory of the second film.

Eh...uh, it looks fine. The use of “God Only Knows” was nice but I’m still not convinced that this needs to exist. I mean, Toy Story 3 already had a lot of similarities with Toy Story 2, but this definitely looks like a retread. Here’s hoping it subverts expectations as CakeofRoth suggested. But I’d be lying if I said I’m expecting much, because I don’t think any of Pixar’s recent sequels have been that special. I really hope I’m proven wrong because I do love Toy Story and the thought of revisiting these characters does sound fun in a nostalgic way.
Also the fact that a spork can become sentient raises all kinds of horrifying questions about how sentience in this world works.

Well I hope this really is the end of it and that I’ll enjoy it as much as the others but at this rate let them do 5 if they want, fuck it. They clearly know what they’re doing with this series.

Damn they pulled it off.
I can't wait to see it now after sitting on the fence for so long.

Currently 100% at RT with 65 reviews in, and 84 on metacritic. As someone who loves the last three Toy Story films, I'm definitely ecstatic to see it now.
I could also see this dethroning Incredibles 2's animation opening weekend record. Presales are strong, and the extremely positive reviews will definitely help.

I thought Toy Story 3 ended the series on a perfect note, so I was very skeptical about Toy Story 4. It looks like I was wrong, and I've seen several reviewers even say that they like it more than TS3.

So I know it’s too early, but a Best Picture nomination is... believable? Probably not though, even though Toy Story 3 pulled it off? It just seems like this one is worthy but is gonna need a strong awards push from Disney, who’s gonna put a lot of chips on Endgame.

Toy Story 3 did, yes, but none of the other films had been nominated in that category, and that nomination felt like a “hard work well rewarded” one because it was the trilogy capper. I don’t know if they’ll feel so inclined to give 4 the same treatment, unless it really is *that* undeniable.

Probably not, because of the 5% first-place or one transferable vote rule, which wasn't in place when Up or Toy Story 3 did it. If Inside Out and Coco couldn't pick up any Best Picture momentum with comparable (superior so far in the case of Inside Out) reviews then I doubt this one does it. The Academy members don't like animated films enough to seriously consider one the single best film of the year. No, that honor is reserved for the likes of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Green Book.

Just found out they aren’t pairing it with a short. A Pixar movie without a short just feels incomplete.

If lion king is good then I would think that is the one they push hard.

Why would they focus on The Lion King when they have this enormous phenomenon of a movie which is the conclusion of their most popular series with stellar reviews and abundant audience love? They sure are gonna be pushing The Lion King hard in VFX but I don't see any reason for Disney to prioritize another one of their remakes (which is gonna be successful, no doubt) over their biggest event movie of the year.

I dont know how they feel about doing something like that. Lord of the rings they knew it was trilogy and nominated all parts.

It's more than just a second part of some movie, it's a total worldwide phenomenon and a proper event. But I actually don't think that they're gonna get nominated anyway.
