This song, by any standard is a very brilliant song and a clearly very sexist one - one of the perfect examples of such and it was written that way too. It's one of the few works of Art that can be positioned like that and not remotely defended on principle - it's not a "good for you" song but it's a very great song nevertheless - built on the contradictions in the best Rock and Roll - uncompromising to the extent that you can sing it to another guy or a girl could sing it to another girl/guy as well.
No one really ever is outraged by Under My Thumb because it strangely appeals to everyone who has felt this way. Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug, but a song about power dynamics has rarely been so clear and pointed and rarely has it sounded so sexy (not sexist) too.
I posted this once before but can't quite seem to find it - but I'm convinced that this song is the greatest "unreleased" song in history.
If not, it's definitely the most romantic ...........if not, it's definitely the best written and sung - he does an amazing vocal and I love this photo - what the fnck are you gonna tell this dude about anything that he doesn't already know better than you that he can't say better than you on top of it?
I'd list The Yardbirds right after the big 4 maybe of all the UK 60s bands (Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks) and there were a lot of great bands...........and you know they did have the best guitar players.........Jeff Beck on this track.
1. While My Guitar Gently Weeps, The Beatles 2. Waterloo Sunset, The Kinks 3. Heroin, Velvet Underground 4. The Sound of Silence, Simon & Garfunkel 5. Voodoo Child, Jimi Hendrix 6. Everybody's Talkin, Harry Nilsson 7. Suspicious Minds, Elvis Presley 8. I Heard it Through the Grapevine, Marvin Gaye 9. The Weight, The Band 10. Walk on By, Dionne Warwick
If Punk started in the 60s..........who started it? The Velvets? MC5? The Stooges? The Who?
Maybe...........or maybe it was this 2:26 of Roky Erickson's great screams and a pounded out repetitive guitar pattern and sneering lyrics about not coming home and the freakout at the end............maybe it was this and............you just didn't realize.
