No one is a fan of Philip Pullman's fantasy trilogy? Really?
I read that shooting is already underway. The directors of the first season are Tom Hooper (2 episodes), Dawn Shadforth (1 episode), Otto Bathhurst (2 episodes), Euros Lyn (1 episode) and Jamie Childs (2 episodes).
The cast is: Dafne Keen: Lyra James McAvoy: Lord Asriel Ruth Wilson: Marisa Coulter Lin-Manuel Miranda: Lee Scoresby Anne-Marie Duff: Ma Costa Clarke Peters: The Master of Jordan College
It's produced by BBC and it will be distributed worldwide by HBO. It's expected to air in 2019.

Wait wtf, that's an excellent cast! Not so keen on the directors (Tom Hooper ) but I'm definitely really excited for this now. Loooove the books - amongst my favourites of the genre. I even liked elements of the film (Kidman killed it as Mrs. Coulter) but I'm obviously expecting much greater things from the show.

Ideally, there would not be two better actors to play Mrs. Coulter and Lord Asriel than Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. Let's hope that the show will not be purged of all of its uncompromising elements, because that's what killed the movie.

I'm really anticipating this one.
It's such a shame the film was such a massive disappointment. If New Line hadn't have taken the film from Chris Weitz in the editing phase, we'd probably already have the entire film trilogy.

Iorek! I'm almost finished with book 3 right now. The first book was one of the greatest fantasy novels ever. The second and third books are trash. When this disaster is over, I'm going to have soooooo many complaints to file. Edit: And the trailer is awful. Ugh.

Okay, I finished this book series. Spoiler filled rants to follow. I hate Mary Malone and every damn second she spends not moving the plot forward. I hate that she gets instructions from her computer telling her to "play the serpent" and with her vast biblical knowledge she says "yeahokayimnotquestioningthisatall" and does whatever she's told. I hate that she shows up in Mulefa-world and becomes the educated white savior to the unwashed masses (who teach her valuable things about... family or something). I hate that Mary speaks to "Angels" in her computer even though Dust is NOT ANGELS. I hate that damn near half the third book follows her doing jack shit while there's a war going on.
I hate that the story makes a fascinating fantasy world and throws it all out the window for the second and third books.
I hate Lord Asriel is considered a good guy doing important work when his actions are just as evil as the bad guys. Apparently child murder is totally cool so long as you want to kill God or some shit.
I hate that Pullman inserts "the evil of religion" into his story without going into any actual struggles of faith anyone might have. Maybe a little bit with Mrs. Coulter, but hers are so narrow. "I want to protect my daughter" doesn't have anything to do with the death of God.
I hate that the multiple world crap allows Pullman to get lazy with his worldbuilding and just throw in whatever the hell he wants.
I hate that the multiple world crap allows Pullman to get lazy and base book 2 in Will's world, which isn't fantastical and exciting at all.
I hate that Pullman hints at characters dynamics and plot threads that are super cool (Iorek and Lee's friendship, Farder Coram and Serafina Pekkala's love) and doesn't dive into this at all.
I hate that Lyra and Will boning can somehow mend the flow of... um... goodness fairy dust... and that they must go back to their own worlds and... um... preach love and happiness? That's your ending, Pullman? Fuck you.

The first is a genuine fantasy masterpiece, the second is a reasonably interesting read, the third a complete mess. I'm still interested to see how they're all adapted, but mainly I just want the first book done true justice on screen.

The first is a genuine fantasy masterpiece, the second is a reasonably interesting read, the third a complete mess. I'm still interested to see how they're all adapted, but mainly I just want the first book done true justice on screen. The first book is unbelievably great. Fantasy writers don't take enough advantage of the fantasy aspects of their works, never fully diving into their worlds and creating unique, new places with fascinating cultures and economies and religions. Pullman did that so damn well before everything turned to shit. But you know what? It ends on a cliffhanger, and in this particular case that didn't feel like the correct decision. First off, because everything that follows book 1 is so mediocre at best, and so the teaser winds up tasting really sour after the fact. The second reason I don't like the ending is that Pullman is introducing some ideas without delving into them, he just throws them at you in the end and you're expected to go with it. I find it really strange to end your first volume with "Lord Asriel wants to kill God" and then there's no further elucidation of why. We get some hints throughout the book that we're heading there, but we still don't get inside the minds of anyone but Lyra. And while that works for this book, ending by making the story about someone else doesn't work if we're not inside his head. And then the next two books just ignore that character as well, so... If it weren't for the ending, I'd say that The Golden Compass/Northern Lights is the second best fantasy novel I've read (behind Watership Down). But the ending bothered me, and the next two books did nothing to remedy my problems with it.

So, have you guys been watching? What do you think?
I don't think the series has done a very good job of building and explaining the world of the books, but I've found it to be solid so far - I enjoy watching it.

I thought it started pretty slow, got better but inconsistently so, with the stuff in Coulter's apartment being super strong, while I was pretty bored by the other subplots.
With these last two episodes where it's been more tied together, and with Lin and the bear, I think it's picked up big time.

I've never read the books or watched the film so I didn't know much about this at all, but I'm liking it so far.Dafne Keen and Ruth Wilson are both great,I wish we got to see a bit more of James McAvoy though.

I like it so far; it's certainly not a perfect adaptation, but I'm glad that this has finally been made. I still hope that Chris Weitz' nearly three hour cut can be released in some form one day.

Finished Season 1 and it was quite entertaining imo so that's all that matters (really enjoyed the talking polar bear the most). Could have used more McAvoy though.

His name is Iorek Byrnison, and he is the true King in the North. To everyone who's watching the show: does season 1 end where book 1 does? Are they covering a book per season? Because the shitshow of the next two seasons will be entertaining to read about, if so. I may actually watch season 1 if it is half as good as the book.
