Timing is impeccable, as he hasn't got any competitive projects to promote this awards season.
He was always going to get it, and considering some of the people near his generation who have already got it (Hanks, Clooney), then you argue he probably could have won it years ago. It's impressive he's winning these lifetime achievement things and is still relevant as an A-lister. The majority of winners get it when their careers are on a downswing.
Aside from people he's worked with, it'd be interesting to get some of his generational predecessors to speak at the ceremony (Pacino, DeNiro etc). Maybe they could even persuade Gene Hackman to come out of retirement to speak or present. That'd be nice.
I can see them getting Gary Oldman to speak, as they are former co-star with a mutual admiration thing going on ( Oldman considers Washington the best actor he has ever worked with, alongside Anthony Hopkins. And he went to support Washington in The Iceman Cometh)

It doesn't make him a better actor than anyone else, but he was MR AMERICA in the 90's. The throwback to James Stewart or Spencer Tracy who represented all the positive ideals of America. It wasn't the most complex of star iconography, but it was incredibly galvanizing and feel good and of it's time. Obviously time has proven Washington the clear dominant American actor of his generation (film and stage), and maybe regardless of nationality. But Hanks and his brand and his movies made America feel good about itself in the 90's. I could understand making an exception to award him young on that basis.

I just looked it up...Hanks got it before DeNiro, Pacino and Streep as well!?!
Ok, that might be pushing things a bit.

Hackman has probably turned the AFI down many times so they'll be afraid to even ask him, lol. Let's think who'll be there... I'd say Spike Lee and Viola Davis are definites... Ethan Hawke, Don Cheadle, Sam Jackson... Jodie Foster? Dakota Fanning? Hopefully anyone that should be there will be there. Even though Clooney was too young to get it in the first place, his ceremony was pretty lame.

Even though Clooney was too young to get it in the first place, his ceremony was pretty lame. I don't think Denzel will have any shortage of former colleagues or co-stars willing to show up for him at the ceremony. I mean when BAFTA LA gave him the Stanely Kubrick Britannia Award, both Julia Roberts and Jodie Foster turned up to present it to him as a pair. Unless they are in the middle of a play or filming and can't get the day off, I think all those he worked with who are asked will show up. Viggo Mortensen (Crimson Tide co-star) is another possibility. I'd say Morgan Freeman will probably be there as well. Tom Hanks gave him the Cecil B Demille at the Globes, so probably him as well. Streep might even show up if invited because of Manchurian Candidate '04. Starpower should be insane, but I'm more interested in whom they might get to speak that hasn't worked with him before. It's always fun to see another great actor or star just turn up to these AFI things and give a speech about the recipient simply because they've watched their work and admired them from afar. Watching Sean Connery turn up to pay tribute to Al Pacino when he got his AFI is a great example of that type of thing. Connery is a legend in his own right and had no connection to Pacino, but just gave a good speech about admiring his career.

Jodie Foster and Julia Roberts showing up for him again.
Starpower is already off the chain, as expected. I see Sam Jackson, Tom Hanks and maybe Gary Oldman being former co-stars likely to show up (barring any filming commitments that clash).
Boseman is a nice touch, as they are linked by Denzel paying for a portion of his tuition when he was studying as an actor.
Would be nice to see some of the older legends (other than Freeman) pay homage to America's greatest living actor as well. Hackman would be an obvious choice, as they've worked together and Hackman has spoken about how brilliant an actor he regards Denzel to be. But he's not even willing to turn up to be honored for these things for himself, so it's a bit much to expect him to fly out of retirement to give a toast to someone else.

AFI always gets the best moments (honoree doesn't get to speak and be awkward or anything) and unlike Kennedy Center which does the same thing, it isn't a sap fest. Worth watching every year regardless of who's getting it even, you hear the best stories @ AFI ........it sometimes can gets a little weird and inside baseball but still the best over the rest of them.......

(honoree doesn't get to speak and be awkward or anything) Don't the honorees speak when accepting the award? Oh damn you're right.......is there something different about that show like we don't see it live, maybe and its edited down? Maybe it's just the presenters are usually so good they steal the show to me. Damn Hollywood with their billions of awards shows confusing a man my age.........why I oughtta..........

Love those AFI awards ceremonies. But it's kind of sad, when you look at the older ones, you're like, hey look, there's Gregory Peck, Eastwood showing up at the Scorsese ceremony, Rickles doing his thing etc. Time is running, dammit.
Washington, richly deserved! Greatest actor alive? Of his generation? American? Well, that's debatable IMO. Living legend, acting genius, maybe even most charismatic actor alive? For sure.
Is he going to work with Spike Lee again, like in the next 3 or 4 years or so? Would love to see it.

Nice!
It’s fitting that Lee would be the one to present it to Denzel, considering they’ve done some of their career best work together and how he also gave his son a major opportunity in his young career. Also helps that Lee is riding a career high right now after Blackkklansman.

Well the best thing about AFI is that the debate doesn't come into it..........I watched the George Clooney one and was like "Fnck it if that dude isn't the best actor I've ever seen" The AFI does a very good job in honoring everyone in that way so after it ends you feel pumped, and when you're fave actor/actress/director wins it, it's really nice for that because you really feel the love............

True. Haven't seen the Clooney one yet (I like him, but whaaat, Clooney before Washington?!... knowing there's more than my simpleton approach to how these things work). In the end, these things are about honoring what makes those people so great to so many fans out there. Arguing about it is futile, how fun/agonizing it might be to talk about things like "who's on first?" (Who!).

Just a reminder this is tonight. DVR alert always a great show: on TNT 10:00 EST Lee, who first worked with Washington on 1990's Mo' Better Blues and directed the actor in his Oscar-nominated performance in Malcolm X, was the evening's final speaker and handed Washington his award, saying, "We are talking about the G.O.A.T. We are talking about Michael Jordan. We are talking about Frank Sinatra. We are talking about Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis. That is the rarified air that Denzel Washington lives and breathes in."

Watched it... some observations:
- Mahershala Ali is the greatest public speaker of all time. - Chadwick Boseman hit pretty hard... MBJ was lame. - Morgan Freeman was hilarious and probably the highlight of the show. Cicely Tyson runner-up. - Chris Pratt's video messages should have been cut... hard to watch. - Denzel's speech was great, but that clip from his father in-law was some pretty simple shit that he could have just quoted.
Overall, a solid show. Could have used a few more solid speakers though. Viola Davis in person and Samuel L. Jackson would've been nice...
