Lady Gaga in A Star is Born > Emma Stone in La La Land

Say, it's actually pretty good! A gentleman's 7 I'd say. Booper will likely win Best Actor and I'm guessing those last 5 minutes will be enough to propel it to a Best Picture victory.

La La Land is one of my favorite movies so I don't have anything against Emma but I was super impressed with Gaga. She better get nominated. The film is locked across the board. No worries there. But if Gaga beats Glenn Close, I might actually seethe. Hey, she lost to Cher, she can lose to Gaga too.

I didn't mind a lot of this movie, but I do wonder why he remade A Star is Born instead of Crazy Heart or Tender Mercies or something as that's clearly what he was infinitely more interested in.
Once her career took off she was pretty much a supporting character. He's spoken about how he wasn't interested in making a movie about a jealous husband, which was fair enough, I thought there'd be more of the "you sold out" thing to build the conflict on instead, but no... He just wanted to make a movie about a tragic, tortured singer.
I can't believe poor Eric Roth's name is on this mess. I'm going to give him credit for all the good stuff, and assume the rest was down to the genius responsible for Remember Me, and all those bad Nicholas Sparks adaptations that all have the same poster.
(THIS POST IS NOT AN INVITATION TO HATE ON ERIC ROTH)

They should just throw every Oscar at it and call it a day. A really fantastic film, emotionally haunting and absolutely stunning acted. The songs were perfectly performed and put in scene. Its natural without the typical Hollywood kitsch or cliche. Its honest and makes you think. All in all a big winner. Bradley Cooper is absolutely STUNNING in the lead role. I am not sure what else will come out to beat that performance. Yes, he is all that. A fine actor generally but this is his role of his life, this is what will in the future define him. Such a troubled character, that easily could have been overdone, but he found literarily every right note to portray it. Lady Gaga is also great, and one of the better examples of singer-turned-actor. She wonderfully developed Ally and becomes her from the first to the last second even if her character changes so much that its totally different in the end. Yes, it somehow shows the parallels to her own personality and life, how she developed in becoming the pop icon she is . When she sang "Shallows" the first time, it was one of those cinematic moments that will always be remembered. A great performance, I had my doubts, but they were shredded. Oh and if that is not enough, there is Sam Elliott who puts a lot of heart and soul to the film. Finally a performance this great actor deserves and that surely will leave some mark this award season. All his scenes are brilliantly performed and its such a deep and natural performance. The songs are wonderful, the look and editing is just great. The screenplay is very good. There were little lengths in the second third of the film but it never dragged thanks to the fantastic direction by Bradley Cooper. A film that wowed me... drove me emotionally crazy and will have a spot in my heart for a long time. Dear Mr. Cooper, this was just your first directional effort, I simply cannot wait for your next. You know how to portray a film naturally without any fake melodramatic nonsense. Excellent.
Current nominations:
Best Picture * Best Director: Bradley Cooper Best Actor in a Leading Role: Bradley Cooper* Best Actress in a Leading Role: Lady Gaga* Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Sam Elliott* Best Adapted Screenplay Best Editing Best Cinematography * Best Costume Design Best Sound Best Ensemble
Rating: 10/10

I really dug it. Movie felt kinda montage-y with how it was cut together, leaving us more with impressions and moments than full-fledged scenes at times, but that mostly worked for me. Felt like a character-centric decision, everything moving so fast and emotions running all over the place and I could get on that groove. A little surprised at its acclaim given I feel like for some other people that technique would be more disorienting than affecting. Anyway, the acting was strong and the songs are terrific, with the first time they sing together on stage feeling like a case of old movie magic. Whenever the movie shifts away from the central relationship and their music together, either to focus on Ally's burgeoning career or Jackson's decline then it loses some of that momentum but by the third act Cooper finds a proper balance with those elements. Overall, it's a nice little crowdpleaser that tells its classical story well and I hope it doesn't suffer too much backlash from this awards season because it's frankly getting exhausting seeing a lot of well-liked smaller-scale movies age like milk because of the bombardment of discussion online over them. And whenever there's a lot of talking on the internet, it inevitably turns negative and nitpicky. Is Gaga gonna be an Oscar-nominated person? She already is ;-)

I thought this was excellent. With his debut Cooper doesn't quite showcase himself as an auteur (yet, I hope!) but what we clearly have here is a really strong craftsman with a wonderful understanding of the importance of his characters' personalities and a strong sense of visuals/energy/sound. I mean, you know a filmmaker is good with sound design when the three sound effects that vibrate under your feet the most are guitars, drums and Sam Elliott's voice.
Cooper found a really nice way into a tale as old as time, hitting all the beats it has had for years but also bringing a lot of his own to it, and specifically shifting the focus from the main male character's jealousy to a confilct between soul and commerce in art. A fine change of gear as far as I'm concerned, and something that makes the character he plays much more leyered and interesting. Cooper does an excellent job behind and in front of the camera - he feels totally at ease on stage but it is in his depiction of Jackson Maine's self-destruction where he shines the most. At the same time, the warmth and affection he shows towards Ally is also palpable.
But as good as Cooper is, it is Lady Gaga who totally surprised and completely floored me. I saw no trace of that weirdly constipated (or just fake) person who I see on the talk shows, and no trace of the megastar we all see in the pop world. I only saw Ally, her vulnerability, her lack of confidence and yet her inner strength, her genuine love for Jackson and for her dad, and of course her undeniable talent. I completely bought the transformation and was just mesmerized by her performance. I also thought that she really made the role her own - I cannot imagine anyone playing Ally the way she did.
I can imagine other people directing this movie the way Cooper did though. Not a diss, of course, but I am looking forward to him finding his more prominent voice in the future behind the camera. With that in mind, this is a terrific start. Not perfect but really really good.

I don't want to say I was disappointed because I still thought it was really good, but one of my biggest pet peeves of mine in cinema is when the passage of time isn't comprehensible. With what happens in the middle 3rd should probably take place over the course of a year or so, but with the Editing and how it was pieced together it felt like Ally's transformation occurs in a day or two.
Easily the best Cooper has ever been. Lady Gaga is quite the force as well. LiBaTiQue doe! Shallow will be the best Original song winner in a verrrry long time
I'm stealing Blanchette's thing here
My Nominations (so far, can change)
Best Leading Actor - Cooper Best Cinematography Best Original Song "Shallow"**** Best Original Song "I'll never love again"

I have no idea why it barely moves during all her interviews (is she deliberately stiff during them or is it just immovable now?) but in the film it's radiant, alive and fully in motion

I just came back from it.
It's good, but I expected a little bit more. The chemistry between Cooper and Gaga is otherworldly, and the acting in general is veeery good (I say this is an easy SAG Ensemble win). What really irked me wrong is how the movie is not about Ally. She's written as a fierce, proud woman, but she basically becomes the emotional support to Jack in the second half. All the arguments and fights between them feel kind of forced, because the source to Jack's downfall isn't really clear (the father? the drinking? the brother? all of them?). The screenplay doesn't do justice to the movie's potential, and as honest and raw Cooper is in this movie (because he really is, and you can feel he cares a lot about this character) I couldn't help but feel that he was playing a textbook version of a drunkard, tbh. He has Best Actor in the bag, but his performance still falls short of its potential. Honestly, I hope he won't be nominated for Best Director, but I know that won't happen.
Gaga on the other hand is glorious. She dominates this character and this movie. Despite the middling script, she gives Ally her three dimensions, and she makes your heart beat for her.
I'd be curious to know what pushed Cooper to start his directing career with this specific movie, because the way it is directed makes it seem like such a personal story.

So I just saw it and I really liked it! Cooper was great probably the best he’s ever been but Gaga was better she stole the movie for me and would make a damn fine winner. I was a bit disappointed with Sam Elliott not with his performance per se but his character felt wasted. He would just show up from time to time and it didn’t help half the time I didn’t understand what he was saying. It was like marbles. His last conversation with Cooper was extremely hard to understand. What was the last thing Cooper said to him before he left? Something about stealing his voice, idk did anyone pick it up?

I’m having this weird thing recently where characters that many find hard to understand I can hear clearly, and yet more precise speakers elude me sometimes. But it all went back to Bobby discussing their father earlier, and Jackson “idolizing him when he didn’t do shit for you.” Also that Jackson stole Bobby’s voice “because you weren’t gonna do anything with it.”
And the last thing Jackson tells Bobby is “You asked me why I stole your voice. It was *you* I idolized.”
