Yeah I have a feeling it won't be long before this thread turns into a beautiful shitshow.

Seeing this on Friday probably. Still confident it's gonna suck, but am ready to eat my words.

The trailer looks so sad, it's probably gonna be such a bad romance.

I’m probably gonna go Friday afternoon, and really I think Gaga is the only reason I have any interest. Although I am curious to see how a that Eastwood/Beyoncé one woulda turned out.

I just got out of it a while ago. First of all, I haven’t seen any of the prior A Star is Born adaptations, so I came into this fresh. So any thoughts I have is based solely on what this had to offer.
As for what it had to offer, I loved this movie. This really feels like (and I’m not bashing the genre) a thinking man’s musical. Lady Gaga is a stunning revelation, and she’ll earn all the plaudits coming her way, but Bradley Cooper is a towering force that goes for absolute broke, and is it a hell of a pay off. It’s aggressive and heartbreaking, almost a Greek tragedy by way of pedal steel guitar, as once prominent charm slowly morphs into self-destructive melancholy. And Cooper’s confidence extends further into the direction, especially the song sequences where the sound mix pits us headfirst into the abrasive and disorienting cheering and crowd reactions (this really benefits from being seen with the best speaker quality possible). Some minor touches aren’t subtle, but he puts his damnedest into it, and it pays off. It ain’t a crowd pleaser in the traditional sense, but it is satisfying.
And Sam fucking Elliot. That is all.

And they’re supposed to be doing this Early Access screening tomorrow night, even though this *was* early access (AMC, you’re drunk). I think they just wanted to get a jump start on Venom.

Happy for Cooper. He's had a rough few years with the exception of the GOTG/Avengers films.

It changed my life about a month ago.

Did you listen to soundtrack yet? Oh Netflix has 70's version. I can’t actually download it until Friday, but yeah, I’ve heard it in context. Very heavily based in Country Rock, with some lovely ballads thrown in. “Shallow” is a definite standout (and likely Oscar frontrunner), and “Black Eyes” and “I’ll Never Love Again” are great bookends. But my favorite was Gaga’s “Always Remember Us This Way” about midway through.

I thought Bradley Cooper gave the best performance of the year and the entire film was a devastating and powerful look at the damaging effects of alcoholism and depression. Completely gutted me. It really felt like Cooper was laying his heart on display for the world to see.

If that’s true, the places he has to go with this character make the performance AND the direction even more impressive to have to channel such dark energy and yet remain capable as a director.
