She never really had star quality. That's not to say she's not a good actress, she just never seemed destined to sustain herself in the industry.

Basically poor career choices. She did have some critical success in the past few years, but at that point it was basically "too late", for any real comeback.

Well i guess one day she will come back with another smash.
Also between Boys Don't Cry and Million Dollar Baby there wasnt really anything she stood out with.

She seems to chase oscar bait projects seemingly. Yeah, plus she seems hard to cast: too tough to play ingénues, not hot enough to play a seductress role, too working class to play a British society lady or something.

It's not like she had a stellar career to begin with. Everything between Boys Don't Cry and M$B was bad-to-average.

Yeah, plus she seems hard to cast: too tough to play ingénues, not hot enough to play a seductress role, too working class to play a British society lady or something. Yes, she did make poor choices, but I think what hurt her career more is that she's just not believable outside a really narrow niche. Don't get me wrong, she's great when she is in that niche, but she's just not very versatile and doesn't have enough charisma to overcome that. Also seems to object morally to certain projects, I am not sure if Graham Norton was because she actually had an issue at all with content and the kind of show Norton has. Really?!? I still give her the side eye for appearing at Ramzan Kadyrov's birthday celebration. Yeah, she said she donated the money, and she didn't know, but I don't buy that since it was her job to do research into the party.

She is so type cast unfortunately. She is a great actress but, as others have said, her southern American tom boyish looks and persona prevent her from getting a lot of roles. She actually would cast well in something like Fargo tv series.

I think she played a sheriff (or some time of cop LOL) in Insomnia with Al Pacino.

It's one of the stranges careers ever. She won an oscar and disappeared (well, of course she played in a view movies, but mostly small roles. Then she won her second oscar. And after this she seemed to get attached to some interesting projects as The Black Dahlia, Freedom Writers or Amelia a bit later. But none of them was really a success so she vanished again.

and what happened to Sean Young and Rebecca de mornay? They seems forgotten as hell too Sean Young I know had mental troubles, but De Mornay was a stranger case. She was so talented and had great range.

She got extraordinarily lucky with her two Oscar wins, which played perfectly to her tomboyish image - she's attractive but in a unique way, so not always easy to cast in high profile roles, say, in the way Jennifer Lawrence is - she might find interesting work on TV, there are so many platforms now, an HBO series could revitalize her career

Seemed like it went downhill for her after Amelia. Hopefully she'll back.

I think it comes down to her not being easy to cast.

Swank isnt Beauty enough for being a movie a Movie star, she isnt charismstic enough for being an audiences favorite for being a leasing lady, AND not good enough for being a character actress

She's just a normally talented actress with very limited range who, pretty much like Zellweger, got over rewarded with two Oscar wins for playing very similar characters.
Hollywood realized that she wasn't a big deal as they originally thought, so they dumped her.

Lack of ambition. She's quite talented, and pretty, and has a nice physique. She just didn't go after quality things aggressively enough. Why is someone as capable as the Abbie Cornish of Bright Star not a thing? Why have I never seen Victoria Justice in a legit movie or TV show?

Hollywood realized that she wasn't a big deal as they originally thought, so they dumped her. Except Zellweger is charismatic, and women love her, in her peak, many men fell in love with her too. Excellent in Musical Comedy, great in commedies and OK in Dramas. Maybe a two note actress, but very charismatic. Her best perfomance with Chicago, is Beatrix Potter. Maybe the only time she trully excelled in drama. I haven't seen her in Judy.- People loved Swank in Million Dollars Baby, but not before or after, because she hasn't big TV or Films hits by her own (except minor hit PS I love you). Boys don't cry was too niche for big audiences.
