This is like the polls Johnny's been doing for actors/actresses/directors but this is for music. If this turns out to be popular I might go ahead and make polls for albums and songs or decade by decade stuff idk. Anyway, the top 50 best musicians of all time.
Voting Rules:
This is pretty much gonna be a carbon copy of the rules Johnny has made for his polls but I'll go ahead and list them out anyway.
• Send me a list by PM, not in the thread. • It should contain your Top 25 musicians of all time, numbered from 1 – 25. If your lists are not numbered, I will count them as 1 – 25 in the order sent. • Your #1 will earn 25, #2 earns 24....and #25 will earn 1 point. You all know the drill. • Once you've voted, you can of course edit your vote by re-sending your ballot to me by PM. • People who have solo careers and with a band can be included of course. For example The Beatles can take up one spot on your ballot and John Lennon can take up another spot. • This isn't specific to one genre, it spans all music. So you could have Beyonce on your ballot followed by Cannibal Corpse, although I doubt anyone will actually put Cannibal Corpse or any death metal band on their ballot. This will probably lead to a very large number of different musicians getting mentioned but I'm sure things will be fine. However no composers, sorry.
Voting officially closes 3 weeks from now, Monday September 24, at midnight. So technically voting officially closes Tuesday September 25 but you get the point.
Please use this thread for FYCs and discussions/arguments.

Hmmmmmmm, this is going to be a Rock and Blues list for me since that's my music of choice but it will be interesting to see what shows up here - assuming Country and Folk are going to get screwed.
I don't expect any of my FYC's to show up, but every one of these is artistically, at least a top 10-15 American Rock artist imo:
Replacements Ramones Husker Du Johnny Thunders (or the Dolls or his Heartbreakers, some permutation for his unbelievable 1973-1978 run)
and arguably Mission of Burma (at least in their original 1981-82 incarnation - small work but crucial)

I was thinking about doing one of these but was too lazy to run it. The results here are going to be interesting since it isn't limited to one genre and you may have a hard time actually making a final list if there are too many artists being mentioned in addition to not enough people voting. It's not going to be like actors or directors where you have a lot of the same people on just about every list. I had four jazzmen, one kind of hip-hop/electronic/misc thing, and one pop star, but the rest were rock acts. That's the way it's going to be for a lot of people, predominantly one genre, and a sprinkling of some others. They're still probably recognized by most people as the greatest punk band of all time. Especially when you look at the whole career, one album wonders like The Sex Pistols don't exactly count. I had them in my top ten.

FYCs are good here folks.
I feel like I have around 20 certainties for my ballot, but that leaves 5 spots I'm perfectly prone to suggestion on. I'll probably leave it till the last few days to vote.

Also if Radiohead ends up making the Top 10 I'm calling the police.

Also if Radiohead ends up making the Top 10 I'm calling the police. The Karma Police? No idea where I would rank them since I'm not sure how I would go about making my own list, but if it's limited to popular music, then I can't imagine not including them somewhere.

IDK if it's limited to popular music or not. It just feels weird to me to compare classical composers to a rock band or something. If Joaquim doesn't object you could vote for composers if you wanted, though.

I'm split on this tbh. Part of me says yes, part of me says no. I'll put up a poll for it.

i mean, i could only vote for contemporary folk artists and indie rock bands so i'll probably abstain. i couldn't say my personal favorite artists are the best of all time because i've hardly heard anything pre-2000s.

Is this just going to end up being a list of me and two other people's favorite artists?

I am pretty much done my list and it's made me realize 3 things: 1. This list is totally my teenage music is better than your teenage music 2. This doesn't follow my list of Actors, Directors, Westerns at all. Those lists were based on 4 things to me - assessment of talent, importance, singularity, personal preference. This list is basically ALL personal preference from 1 through 25 with a little variance for the rest but not much. 3. I try to avoid artists who only did a limited amount of work - which shows me how many of all time favorite artists are like that - if they only did 1 record period or only did a couple of special ones..........they likely (but not in all cases) got left off here.

Is this just going to end up being a list of me and two other people's favorite artists? I’m reevaluating my favs before putting my personal list in but I’ve been way to fucking busy lately. I’ll get it done though.

If hardly anyone is participating, and if most people are just doing their faves instead of necessarily using "importance" as a parameter (trying to assess that across genres and time periods would be a nightmare imo), then maybe I'll join in after all. Though it'd probably be a pretty loose ranking.

Though it'd probably be a pretty loose ranking. It looks like we need as many people as possible, so you might as well. It's not like this is a professional critics list that's going to get published everywhere.

So I have a ranked list of 21 ready, and will fill it up and vote in plenty of time. I just need to see who is taking those last 4 spots.
