Bone Tomahawk was one of my absolute favorites but I was definitely disappointed in Brawl in Cell Block 99 (despite Vaughn's wonderful performance). I really hope that this one will be more to my liking.

Calling BS on that Daily Beast review here too (and did so in the Venice thread) - I have not seen the film, but that PC sh*t review has no place, none, zero in film criticism. Talking down to the audience like they're idiots.
I'd like to see it, I think there may be more there than meets the eye at first - the negative reviews are suggestive of that actually.

It sounds like my biggest issues with Zahler as a filmmaker are still evident -- namely, that he is incapable of "killing his darlings." Bone Tomahawk was great but could've used some tightening 'round the middle, but Brawl on Cell Block 99 was a good forty-five minutes too long. A writer-director can be their own worst enemy, and it sounds like these bloated tendencies have remained with Dragged Across Concrete. That gives me pause. I think Zahler needs a Sally Menke of his own to curb his dalliances.

I've thought about doing a Soderbergh-esque fan re-edit where after Vaughn is arrested, he is sent straight to the Don Johnson prison rather than dicking around at the minimum security one for half an hour. I'm leery about the length of Concrete but at least it seems a bit more justified due to its premise and the fact that it has two leads rather than one, but yeah, I really wish Zahler would learn that leanness would suit his style a great deal.

It’s 158 minutes? Jeez. I loved Bone Tomahawk and liked Brawl in cell block 99, but they both suffered from the same problem of being too damn long. Eager to see if Zahler can justify the length this time but I honestly kinda doubt it.

Yeah Bone Tomahawk’s runtime didn’t bother me too much. I feel it could’ve been slightly trimmed, like 5-10 minutes but nothing too egregious. I enjoyed Cell Block 99 but I would’ve liked it a whole lot more if it was 100 minutes instead of 132 minutes.

Not the best trailer (if I didn't know already about plot details, I would have been completely lost here), but I have faith in the director and its cast. Really stoked for it.

Eh . . . I liked the first teaser more. Seems like they're shaving off some of the more unsavory bits of the story for mass consumption, which I totally understand, but it comes off less like an exploitation throwback to the '70s and more like a modern Michael Mann knock-off. Still, always game to see Mad Mel, and Vaughn, Kier and Johnson definitely brought it in their last outing with Zahler.

Any words on DVD/Bluray release? It's getting a VOD release next Friday, so it'll be online then. Hopefully it'll be a better weekend watch than Triple Frontier.
