Finally started watching this now that I'm on break. I was incredibly skeptical going in and was honestly just gonna skip it altogether, as I had a strong suspicion from the trailers and all the information surrounding it that it would just come off as an overbearing self-parody of the first season. My suspicions were confirmed for the first half of the first episode and I was getting ready to dismiss it, but I gotta say, I was really roped-in by the mystery and now I'm hooked. Some parts of it still rub me the wrong way -- the three-tiered timeline hasn't really added anything so far, and other elements of it (the aesthetic, the general story structure with motifs like the two partners having long talks driving in the middle of nowhere) just feel too much like someone making a wannabe imitation of True Detective Season 1. Still, the performances are uniformly strong so far, and as I said, I'm really interested in the storyline by this point, so I'll stick with it. Certainly much more impressive than the second season had been by this point ... not that that's saying much. Definitely stick with it... It absolutely has S1's blueprint out in full view, but it does separate itself enough as it goes on.

So, I finished it today. As far as seemingly unnecessary seasons of television go, this is one that was way better than it had any business being. That said, I still hold a lot of reservations about it. It never broke away from the first season enough for me, always feeling like a knockoff imitation that also happened to lose that season's atmosphere of the macabre and much of its spiritualism. Surprising lack of set-pieces definitely deprived it of its energy to some degree and made the individual episodes kinda indistinguishable, and, yeah, the ending reveal was real underwhelming. It solves its mystery in the most uninteresting way it could, especially given that most of what Junius says in his monologue was already known by the audience beforehand, and it is just a disappointingly simple answer in general when the case was made out to be so complex for so long. Though if we're talking bad exposition dumps in the finale, I actually think the even more egregious one came later on in the episode, when Amelia comes back to Wayne to spell out the whole Mike/Julie reveal for us ... really deflated the impact of that twist, I felt. Aside from that, though, the last twenty or so minutes of the finale were kinda beautiful. The season was really strong overall: the old man stuff that seemed silly to me at first turned out to be absolutely heartbreaking, and Ali and Dorff absolutely killed it (throughout the season, but especially in that timeline), and I really loved Ejogo and her character as well.
Still, no scenes with Matthew McConaughey telling a distraught woman that she should "probably" kill herself (even if we did get something similar in the finale, lol) ... so I still call BS on all these "it touches the first season" claims. But pretty damn solid television, though.

Straight-up fantastic season of television. I liked S1, particularly the riveting performances from Harrelson and McConaughey and the dynamic between them, but find it pretty overrated for the most part. S2 was so poor I gave up after 3 episodes, though I've heard from some it got a little better as it went on.
This season just really clicked for me in a way the other two didn't. Mahershala Ali continues to blaze his own distinct trail of mesmerising performances. Loved Dorff and Ejogo as well - neither had ever made much of an impression on me before, but both were excellent in their roles. It was a slow burn but never dull, with a gripping and at times genuinely unsettling mystery that hooked me in from the first episode. Elements of the reveal, especially that big exposition dump, felt a little lacking, but I loved the nicely optimistic way it chose to go out. Terrific stuff.

S2 was too bloated for its own good, but I still think it's worth the watch. I'd put Farrell in the same level as Ali and Dorff despite obviously lesser material to work with. Plus, 2.05 is one of my favorite episodes of television. But glad to see you enjoyed S3, even if I think S1 is practically perfect... 3 was a worthy addition to it.

finally got around to this. incredibly messy season. spreading the story across three timelines felt unnecessary and the convoluted time jumps between them isn't justified by the mystery which turns out to be shockingly bland. and the whole true-crime documentary shtick turned out to be nothing more than an expository device with no revelations to bring. i remember in her last scene the interviewer mentioned that she was disappointed by hays' contributions, and i'm like join the club. the acting was strong overall, with high marks for ali, ejogo, and especially dorff, but i have to admit whenever ejogo and ali were in frame i was just waiting for the show to get back to true-detective-ing. best moments: - roland fighting the hicks in the bar - woodard's last stand (he was one of the season's highlights and it was a shame he didn't play a larger role in it) - dorff's emmy reel at the end of episode 5 it's better than the trainwreck that was season 2 but still a farcry from season 1. hopefully whatever pizzolatto comes up with next is a bit more out there and interesting because this season was duller than that rock that killed little will purcell.

STEPHEN DORFF FUCKING ROBBED And Ejogo ... MVP of the first two timelines of the season... Seems they didn't really care for the show much, just Ali, who's just become a guaranteed nominee at almost all awards shows now.

Season 4 is in development without Pizzolatto. I'll hope for the best... but it's probably time to put this thing out of its misery once and for all.

Jenkins gives me a lot of optimism, though, as I always felt the man was perfectly equipped for a noir. The way he frames faces... God, if he could play with black-and-white, it would be sensational. (On a side-note: imagine Barry Jenkins's The Big Nowhere.)

I say give this a fair shot without Pizzolatto who only had one good idea for a season (and even that didn't stick the landing). Jenkins is fantastic, if he can't revive this then it's over.

Worth a shot without Pizzolatto but I'm also slightly in the camp of letting it end on a (pretty good) note. It's seemingly impossible to top S1 though.

HELLO. Who do we want for Navarro? 'Cause I'm thinking Salma. If the partner was male I'd go with John Leguizamo who I'd like to see do some good, big part. But anyway, The new writer-director, Issa López, has worked with Marina de Tavira - Oscar nominee of Roma, and whose last movie was for, you guessed it, HBO. Keep eye on her. López also worked several times with Tony Dalton, interesting actor with potential (Hawkeye, Better Call Saul) I'd like to see cast somewhere in here.

Even though it appears that we're looking at a female duo this season, I would love it if Dalton were a major character.
