Yeah, I wonder exactly how much of it he was supposed to direct in the first place... 2 episodes is a quarter of the season... hopefully he set a nice tone for the rest of the season. I'm still looking forward to it regardless. He was meant to direct 3 episodes, so it's not a huge loss considering what was intended since he's literally only being replaced for a single episode. Still disappointing that he left, whatever the reason was. Still excited to see what he brought to the table

Looks like he's back to what he was doing in S1, which is a very good thing.

Damn, that’s a helluva trailer. Mahershala Ali looks fantastic here!

As a big fan of the first season, and someone who really likes Mahershala Ali ... I am still finding it hard to muster any interest in this. That trailer just didn't do it for me at all.
Anyway, can we just take a minute and appreciate how awesome it could've been if this were the thing that Ali and Mortensen co-starred in? I mean, it's unlikely considering Viggo has never really done TV, but still, a fun hypothetical to consider.

Reminiscent of season 1 and that's a good thing.

The first two episodes feel much more reminiscent of Season 1 than Season 2. Saulnier's direction adds a terrific, foreboding mood that I hope the other directors can continue. Ali is great, although there are times that his guttural mumblings come off a bit incomprehensible. I actually came away more impressed with Dorff and Ejogo, who were both giving career-peak work here. McNairy and Gummer were a bit too histrionic for my liking, but they thankfully aren't on-screen enough to make much of a poor impression.

and just finished episode two...fantastic! Jeremy Saulnier definitely did a great job setting the mood & tone for this season and I hope the other directors follow suit. I don't want to jinx it but its looking like we are in for a treat with this season . And Nic Pizzalatoo seems to have learned his lesson from the previous season on overstuffing so much shit into only 8 episodes . Season 3 seems much more like a character study of Detective Hays (played by Ali) which is quite refreshing .

I really enjoyed the first two episodes. It’s great seeing Mahershala Ali in a lead role and I think he’s been really killing it so far. He’s not trying to be Rust Cohle 2.0, just being very naturalistic. Noticeably, the dialogue feels much stronger here than in the previous seasons. I love Rust’s nihilistic monologues in season 1 but they wouldn’t have worked at all if a lesser actor was saying them. And season 2 just had a lot of weird cringey lines (“buttfuck your dad with your mom’s headless corpse”). But so far season 3, although certainly cynical, hasn’t gone down the blatant nihilistic dialogue path yet, simply conveying through atmosphere.
Jeremy Saulnier’s work here is really making up for the supremely disappointing Hold the Dark. Damn shame he couldn’t have directed the whole season but I guess we’ll see how the rest of the episodes are. The three timelines is ambitious storytelling without feeling overstuffed and so far it’s never been confusing following the story, though I’ll be curious to see if it pays off by the end.
Still, off to an excellent start. Already shaping up to be much better than season 2 (which I actually kinda liked, at least more than most, though I don’t really have any desire to revisit it).

I did not care for season two at all, but I'm liking the third so far. Strong opening and while I don't think the rest of the episodes have quite lived up, there's enough to keep my interest. Very thankful it's not a West Memphis Three rip off that it initially appeared to be. I also love that Carmen Ejogo has a meaty role and Ali is very good. Makeup is very well done as well. McNairy and Gummer are weaksauce, but over all the ensemble is strong, I especially love seeing Gadon pop up. Hope it sticks the landing.

Episode 5 is Stephen Dorff's Emmy reel. That last ten minutes is the best work of his career.
