He's cute. He's got a young Brando look in that photo. I haven't seen Montpi. While we're discussing Romy, how great is Les Choses de la vie? That's got to be one of her best films (my favorite so far is still the heavy-hitting L'important c'est d'aimer). This is really Michel Piccoli's film, actually, and he gives such a terrific performance in it. But Romy importantly casts this light over it and they work so well together. That one I really liked. I badly want to see Max and the Junkmen next, but I can't find it.

I loved her in INNOCENTS WITH DIRTY HANDS, Claude Chabrol flick in which she teams up with Rod Steiger. The film is a bit campy but wildly entertaining nonetheless. It also has a quite memorable opening scene.

Shoutout to Mattsby to alerting me to this website! Are you interested at all in the Sissi movies? They are pure comfort food - in Austria and Germany, it's tradition to watch them at Christmastime.

Thank you, sweetheart (and Mattsby)! I'll check the first Sissi movie out and see if I'll continue. I am curious because those things were so huge it had her country treating her like an actual princess.

pacinoyes It's true what's said in there. She was so photogenic. Incredible gaze. I may watch it, but I saw a documentary on Romy and I found it so depressing that it was hard to get through. Her life was so tragic (her poor son!). I feel the same way about watching Judy Garland documentaries. There's not much interest in her in America (she didn't have a huge career here) but she appears to remain such a beloved and fascinating figure to Europe still and that's great. Bad luck. Or maybe if she was born ten years before or ten years later, she could be a Huge Hollywood Star. Maybe if she hadn't died at 43, she could have a respectable Hollywood career like Deneuve or Huppert.- Will never know. She was too beautiful for Hollywood, when she arrived in the early 60s, and this distracts audiences. Who wants to pay attention to The Cardinal or What's New Pussycat with her face and body in it.- She should work better in an Elvis movie.- If she was born ten years before, she could easily replace Judy Gaarland and June Allyson, and maybe ended as Hitchcock muse, if she was 10 years later she could be Robert Altman or John Cassavetes muse.- If she had a much longer life probably she could be Oscar nominated for a Woody Allen Film.-

@tyler Look what I saw... I didn't hate Monpti but it isn't necessarily my type of movie. It was a screwball romantic comedy (ew at that genre) then it went tragedy on me - it was a little all over the place. The 1950s aren't my favorite era for film anyway. Romy and Horst Buchholz do make such a charming, down-on-their-luck couple that you really root for. Romy supposedly fell in love with all her costars, so maybe that explains why she always had such good chemistry with them. Buccholz must have been a big star in his time? He had that perfect 1950's matinee idol look and he's so likable.

Have you guys seen Good Neighbor Sam? One of Romy's few American films... She and Jack Lemmon are an absolute hoot together - amazing goofball chemistry between the two of them. Also, a BAFTA nomination for Lemmon! It's currently streaming on Criterion.

L'Important c'est d'aimer... Oh, I love this moment! The way Fabio Testi looked at her throughout that movie. No I haven't seen that film. But I do adore Jack Lemmon, comedy or drama. I don't believe I've seen Romy in any of her English-language films. Is the film version of the Trial that Orson Welles made any good?

PromNightCarrie - I actually haven’t seen her collaboration with Welles, but I have seen ‘The Cardinal’ - The American film for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. It’s far from her best work, but I totally understand the need to see it if you’re a Romy completist.
