GOAT according to Ben Shapiro. Are we going to allow this?

GOAT according to Ben Shapiro. Are we going to allow this? Ben Shapiro's opinion on film is automatically disqualified when referring to Amadeus a film with 8 Oscar wins including BP as under-appreciated.

At least he correctly thought Dunkirk deserved BP.

I thought about Wyler, but I think tried to think of it as not just ranking the directors with the best filmographies and actually thinking about the best directors. A lot of the time his job was to not screw up great scripts like Roman Holiday and The Heiress. This isn't really to diss him necessarily, if the ballot was a top 30 there probably would have been room for him.

Really, I thought he worshiped Nolan? He made one of the last few spots on my list (Nolan, not Ben Shapiro).

Really, I thought he worshiped Nolan? He made one of the last few spots on my list (Nolan, not Ben Shapiro). He wrote an article on who he thought are the greatest directors ever. I read it a while back and he said that he even though he loves Nolan he couldn't put him on the list because he's too new. Wyler was his #1. I'm trying to find the article again but no luck so far.
And Nolan should be towards the top of your list, not one of the last few spots. Reported for heresy.

A lot of the time his job was to not screw up great scripts like Roman Holiday and The Heiress. This isn't really to diss him necessarily, if the ballot was a top 30 there probably would have been room for him. Wyler doesn't have a set style, true, but the fact that he so perfectly handles everything he gets his hands on says a lot. Expensive epic? Try Ben-Hur. Social horror story? The Little Foxes is here for that. The Best Years of Our Lives is present if you want The Deer Hunter done right. True, he has no specific stamp, but the fact that all of his movies have such perfect direction no matter what they are makes him one of the greats for me. I think focusing on " auteurs" is a disservice to the masters of the Hollywood system, of which Wyler was king. It's why auteur theory bothers me: Too many directors are cast aside because they don't fit the mold of the "visionary." Are Howard Hawks, Frank Capra and Michael Curtiz lesser than Alfred Hitchcock? I don't think they should be, necessarily. They did what they could in their world, and they did it damn well. P.S. A few more FYCs. Not sure if they'll make my ballot (pretty sure they all will), but I'm a fan of all of the following anyway: Satoshi KonKen LoachMamoru Oshii

Can Dreyer and Argento get some love too? Dreyer will be in the Top 20 if this forum has any sense. Argento's pretty solid, but if we're talking directors who are primarily known for horror I'd take Romero, Hooper, or Carpenter over him any day.

He should be no.1 or at least top 3 He should indeed, but I just didn't see any FYCs for him. Not that I thought he needed one, but just wanted to make sure!

The ballots have been flying in, thanks to all the early voters.
All counted now and some fun facts... 141 different directors have already been mentioned, so I think the actors figure will be surpassed. We've already had three different leaders, so three times the amount that the actors poll ever had.
The most ballot appearances so far is 11 out of 15 for two directors, but neither of those have been a #1 vote. The most #1 votes for far is 3 a piece for two directors.
