Nintendo released another Direct to update on the game’s development. Looks really promising. Still no word on a single-player adventure like Brawl’s Subspace Emmisary (although, the blurred image of a “secret” mode possibly hints it’s coming). But the main draw here is the multiplayer, which is seeing a lot of refinements both subtle and obvious. Total number of stages both new and returning will exceed over a hundred, almost twice as much as Wii U. There are also 900 music tracks totaling 28 hours on a non-stop loop.
But we’re all really here for the fighters, which will be the largest ever assembled. The game is bringing back *every single fighter* that has ever been playable in a Smash game (a total of 65 fighters), and with the addition of new characters, that number currently sits at 73 with the potential of more (although game director Masohiro Sakurai did say temper your expectations).
Currently confirmed new fighters are: The Inklings from Splatoon Daisy from Mario Ridley from Metroid Simon Belmont from Castlevania Richter Belmont from Castlevania Chrom from Fire Emblem Dark Samus from Metroid Prime King K. Rool from Donkey Kong Country
The game comes out for the Switch December 7th.

Honestly, I don't think a single person was really hankering for any of those fighters.
Btw, even I being one of the worst Smash players of all time could easily beat the campaign. Campaign in those games is doodie.

Honestly, I don't think a single person was really hankering for any of those fighters. I didn’t know there were people who unironically wanted Waluigi (like, who cares about stupid Waluigi), so you’d be surprised. I know people have been clamoring for Ridley and K. Rool since at least Melee.

Now Isabelle from Animal Crossing (which is also getting a new game in 2019) is joining the roster, putting the total fighters at 74.

Nintendo held its final Direct to focus on Smash before launch. It was a lot of announcements on refinements to the mechanics, new features and tweaks, and assist trophies.
There were also new fighter announcements, Ken from Street Fighter, and Incineroar from Pokemon: Sun and Moon. Those two were the last fighters to be announced for game launch, which sets the total roster at a whopping 74 fighters (76 if you count Ivysaur, Charizard, and Squirtle as separate). However, there will be five more fighters included as paid DLC after launch. One of these, and when it’s finished will be given to you free if you pre-order the game, is the Piranha Plant from the Mario games.
Lastly, they finally announced a new single player campaign in the vein of the Subspace Emissary, called World of Light. This game looks amazing. I can’t wait!

The game comes out today, enjoying a 93 currently on metacritic. And as if that wasn’t enough, we now know our first DLC character.
Joker from Persona 5.
Strange seeing a PlayStation character on a Nintendo game, especially when Sony had their own fighting game. But after Cloud, I guess anything’s possible.

Shit. I'm thinking of Wario.
Fuck Waluigi! My friends always made me lose to him on Mario Party. Guy was a tank on Mario Part 7.

Okay. I’ve played some, I’ve unlocked all the characters (side note: the AI is friggin’ Satan in this game), I’ve tried my hand at ALL of them. And I’m not gonna offer any thoughts or impressions since I’ve barely scratched the surface (although I’m having a ton of fun), but as for my thoughts on the new fighters and who I’ll be maining this game, here they are...
Chrom is the perfect amalgamation of Fire Emblem, and just a perfect character in general.
Daisy is a slightly better Peach (as a fighter, in general she’s way better), but I don’t much like playing as her.
Dark Samus, like regular Samus, only floatier and worse.
Incineroar makes up for his weight issues with great combat skill.
Inkling is a gimmick character done right, with great added strategy.
Isabelle is so much better than The Villager, adorable too, but still pretty low on my rankings.
Ken like Ryu is good, but I can’t really get the hang of him.
King K Rool is a better Bowser, and so satisfying to control.
Ridley is probably my favorite heavyweight in the game.
Simon and Richter are clones, and both of them are good, but slightly clunky.
Anyway, having tried out all the fighters, I’m gonna be maining Inkling, Chrom, and Mewtwo most often, with potential for me to like other characters more as I get into the meat and potatoes. The controls in this game are sublime, and I can’t wait to explore it more, and get into the single player campaign.

The more I play him, the more I’m loving Ridley, and he probably tops Inkling as who’ll be my main.
I also tried out some of World of Light, the single player mode. And holy crap! This mode opens with an army of Thanos’ dinner gloves annihilating the hell out of all the characters but Kirby. And I tried playing a couple hours last night, and it’s gonna take a long time to finish it all, which is kind of killing my buzz (when all they had to do was make something closer to Subspace Emissary and less open world), but I’ll try more of it. I’m not sure if I’m liking that convoluted spirits system yet.

DLC fighter 4 of 5 is Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury. One last left to announce. (Crash, Master Chief, Doom Slayer?)
And playing as Banjo is so satisfying.

Master Chief in a Smash Bros. game? [no] If Joker can, and he’s not even on a Nintendo console, literally anything’s possible.

That's it, I'm never playing Smash Ultimate. I refuse. I fucking refuse. I am not subjecting myself to Sans.

So our last DLC fighter was announced... and it was boring. We’re getting ANOTHER damn Fire Emblem swordfighter, Byleth.
On the other hand, there are said to be six more DLC fighters added through to 2021.
