Obviously one of the biggest international film stars of all time, and oddly under-discussed here (especially for an Oscar, Cannes, and Venice winner!). I guess she didn't make much of a dent in our recent poll? Please, share your thoughts? What are some of your favorite performances and films?

I definitely need to see more of her work, but all I'm gonna say is whoever hasn't seen A Special Day needs to get on that.

If I had to put together a list of the five greatest female screen presences, she would rank highly on it every time. She is, in my opinion, the definition of sex appeal: every time she sets foot on-screen, the celluloid practically melts with her blast-furnace heat. But that sensuality belies her even greater weapon: her talent. Loren is one of the all-time greats, capable of both breezy comedy and shattering drama with equal skill, and even when she winds up projects that aren't worth her time on paper, she makes them worth it because she can't help but be on all the time.
My list of essential Sophia films:
Desire Under the Elms Two Women Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow The Fall of the Roman Empire Marriage Italian-Style A Countess from Hong Kong More Than a Miracle Sunflower The Voyage A Special Day Prêt-à-Porter
Plus I think she's a lot of fun in Grumpier Old Men.

I didn't rank her quite as highly as she probably deserved, but I wanted to guarantee some love for the likes of Setsuko Hara and Anna Magnani (who both made the list), as well as Geraldine Page and Charlize Theron (who didn't).

Not every director was able to get the best from her. Vittorio DeSica clearly could. I vastly prefer her in roles of a commoner, where she was so natural.

One of my favorite stars in Europe. And one of all time favorite actresses. Owned the 60s and even Hollywood took note, but she would continue to be great into the 70s. I know she's "old", and these days she's seen and thought of as an image in black and white more than anything. Stars like Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, and Audrey Hepburn are at least........more accessible, because they've been in major films that were in color, and those films are some of the biggest Hollywood productions in history. For this reason, and many others.... Loren has been obscured a bit. Her omission in the recent polls were hideous. Also, I would like to say.... when I think of the image of Italian neorealism, I think this: Post-war poverty with a mother in raggy loins desperately protecting her child. So in my eyes, she's the face of Italian neorealism. (And I realize people are thinking the 40s... but this is a screenshot from Two Women. (1960)

I loved her in Marriage, Italian Style, and can't recall what I thought of her in Nine (though that movie sucked, apart from visuals and a few songs). I haven't seen her in anything else.
In terms of looks, she's probably my favorite female sex symbol.

I haven't seen her in any of her serious work, unfortunately. Most of which was in Italian.
But even in her sometimes questionable Hollywood films she was always such a true movie star. One of those people who knew just what to do in relation to the camera and where for some reason (even aside from her being gorgeous) you had to pay attention to every single thing she did.
Then of course she might be the sexiest woman of the 20th century. I remember (might've been my first exposure to her) seeing her as a teenager when she did the famous Pirelli calendar, probably when she was in her early 70's, and she still looked incredible. 15 year old me was into her right away.
My favorite movie from her is probably Arabesque with Gregory Peck (again, haven't seen Two Women or any of the other De Sica stuff). It's one of those glossy 60's thrillers in the vein of Charade and Gambit. So much fun.

I prefer Virna Lisi, but still.- Any way, I found one of the most charismatic actresses, with a great sex appeal.- My biggest complaint is(if it's true she was born in 1934) that she started to look much older in her middle twenties, so her career ended in her early 40s.- After that she has lived from her own myth, reapiting herself in all the few movies, tv movies and miniseries she made since 1980.
Still fun to watch, she was the best of Nine, Grumpier old Men, and one of the best of Pret a Porter. She is an excellent comediant.- But maybe only her films directed by Lina Wertmüller (which I haven't seen) were her only challanging roles in the past 30 years.-

For this reason, and many others.... Loren has been obscured a bit. Her omission in the recent polls were hideous. Loren is younger than Taylor, Hepburn and Kelly, and most of her films (at least the ones I remember) are in colour. Her American films weren't as good as her european filmography.- Don't get me wrong, she has an interesting career in Hollywood. Her best film there is El Cid, probably the best Middle Age film Hollywood never made. She looks beautiful, her character is complex, but unfortunately I was more intrigued by Alfonso (John Fraser) and Urraca (Genieveve Page) than El Cid (Heston) and Jimena (Loren).- Then she was praised by Charlie Chaplin in the Countess of Hong Kong, she was quite effective in commedies with much older men, and in colourish Feuilleton. So in her average Hollywood films and performance, are not even close to the average of Taylor, Kelly or Hepburn. At least she was wise with her options and hadn't made turkeys like Bloodline or the Flinstones.-
