Quick question before I finalize my line-ups for 1955. I was so sure he was lead until he pretty much disappeared for most of the second half. Billy Chapin feels like the only true lead, but really unsure with Mitchum.

I say lead. He drives the story and even if he isn't on-screen, his influence is definitely felt. Same with Bardem in No Country.

He's lead and he's spectacular.

He's lead and he's spectacular. Very much agree there. If Lead, he'd be my #2 in an incredibly strong line-up, but if Supporting he'd be my winner far and away. So good. Also loved the movie A LOT.

he's the only lead in the movie! I feel Billy Chapin has something to say about that!

He's lead along with Chapin, but I think this is one of those cases where I wouldn't roll my eyes at someone choosing to place him in support.

But yeah I definitely want to re-watch this at some point to make a firm decision because I was surprised how many far and away felt he was leading. The only true lead felt like Billy Chapin to me. I think I ended up on Lead for Mitchum, but seems borderline to me at best.

It's crazy how many characters are packed into this 90 minute movie. Mitchum is just absent from too much of the movie for me to consider him lead... but my all-time supporting top 10 now has a new member at least.

Viced Curious to hear your thoughts on the film. I re-watched it a couple of months ago and I have to say, the ending really fell flat for me... mainly because Powell turns into a bumbling buffoon. The last scene kinda feels out of place too. I loved everything else, though. And I think Mitchum is leading.

The last scene kinda feels out of place too. I loved everything else, though. And I think Mitchum is leading. I watched it three times between like 2010-2014 and thought it was a stone cold masterpiece. A one-of-a-kind twisted fairytale with some amazing performances. Yesterday..... bumped it down to like an 8.5. Still love it, but yeah... it ain't perfect. It's a bit too all over the place... especially in the final 20 or so minutes (the stuff with Ruby and the boys especially is pretty awkward). Harry Powell is a legendary character, but should be better defined. Is he a criminal mastermind or just some wild psycho? He goes from tripping over a jar and running up the stairs like a deranged mummy to tracking them down on the horse like he's Anton Chigurh or something. Then he gets shot (how badly?) and just chills in the barn for a while... it's pretty confusing. I don't know if I just wasn't in the right mood for it yesterday, but a lot of the flaws that I previously overlooked kind of bugged me.
