I have a standard answer for males and that the top 6 below are the best "modern" English language male performances I've seen and I refuse to rank them because they are works of genius and who am I but a mere mortal, so all below are unranked, overall, in the modern era (post-67)
Brando, Last Tango DeNiro, Taxi Driver DeNiro, Raging Bull Pacino, Godfather II Pacino, Dog Day Afternoon DDL, There Will Be Blood
Irons, Dead Ringers Depardieu, The Woman Next Door Dewaere, Serie Noire Kinski, Aguirre Wrath Of God
Females no order:
Huppert - La Ceremonie Huppert - Story of Women Adjani - Story of Adele H Streep - Sophie's Choice Streep - Silkwood Rowlands - A Woman Under The Influence Ullman - Face To Face Hunter - The Piano Bonnaire - Vagabond Schygulla - Marriage Of Maria Braun

Yes, with Depardieu who had maybe the greatest 10 year stretch for any actor ever in the 80s you could pick a lot, the ones you mentioned and a whole lot more too (Police, Return of Martin Guerre, Danton etc). What I tend to be impressed with in actors as diverse as he was and all-time great is a performance unlike the others that still captures himself.
In that film he is not exotic, he is not showy or overtly grand like in many of his other (great) roles. He's "relatively" normal, even boring: he has a job, a wife, a family and yet at the same time he is quite clearly, in a way, mad. Then he goes deeper - he has many scenes in that film where he quite rationally and almost by his own choosing, let's his constructed life slip away. It's not just the character but how he articulates that - he never once dips into Depardieu-isms or tricks to make it easy for himself. The first time, I saw the movie I was equally impressed with Ardant......in subsequent viewings...........she is still good but really just the catalyst for his arc.
It's like people who think Vicky Krieps is the standout in Phantom Thread (a film that reminds me very much of The Women Next Door). I think she's great, like her a lot, but it's the male leads picture and the more you see it, the more you realize that imo.

The Devils is ridiculously underrated, even by cinephiles, who are supposed to know better. One of the most intense, and intensely acted films I've ever seen. Reed was goddamned magnificent and in that one shining moment fufilled the promise of his talent, and Vanessa Redgrave matched him step for step. Masterclass acting by the both of them.

Russell and Redgrave are my wins (career-best work from her, by the by), and Reed ranks very highly in my 1971 Best Actor ballot, which truly is one of the all-timer categories for me.

Just so y'all know, I deleted the posts with any spoilers in it. In case you're wondering why I deleted any of your replies to Ray, it was only because of the bolded spoiler in the post. I've not seen The Devils and don't wish for it to be spoiled. That is all, thanks.
Also, love a lot of these lists here. I've noticed Jesse Eisenberg pop up on a few for The Social Network and that makes me so happy. Glad we're all coming around on that genius performance. One of the best of his generation, in my opinion.
