Two of my least favorite female performers who've some fooled the masses into thinking they're major-league talents.
Witherspoon's lows are significantly more excruciating than Adams' but their peaks are roughly the same. Basically the latter is more consistent but also more consistently milquetoast/unremarkable while her opponent varies wildly between awful and inspired.

Amy Adams. Easily. And she is a major-league talent.
Witherspoon is pretty good as well, despite her extremely fake persona.

Both are incredible actresses and the best of this generation, but I pick Amy.

I quite like both, but it's Adams, hands down. She's far more consistent, picks MUCH better projects and regularly delivers very good performances. Not much of a competition for me.
With that said, though, Witherspoon was brilliant in Wild. Luminous work, and one of my favorite lead female performances in recent years.

Adams, but they are both among some of the better and more watchable presences.
I like early Adams better than Adams in the Obama period, but she has great work in both decades. Some I like more than others, some less, but there's no obvious decline or anything. That's why I like her, she's so consistent. Even more consistent than Blanchett I would argue. And Streep... while having a longer period of consistency, has been pretty lazy in the last 10 years.
Witherspoon is one of the rare people that got better as she got older. She shed that little precocious bratty girl persona late, but it was completely gone in Wild and Big Little Lies, and at that point I began to really admire her. Not very great before that though I admit, but since then she's become a favorite. I'd give her Oscars for both, but at least an Emmy for the latter. Oh wait... she's #2 in both years actually. Cotillard and Lange are my wins, respectively.
And looking at that Mulligan vs Williams thread, and probably some other moments of questionable board insights, I don't think I'd look here to know who's a major league talent or not.

This thread offends me.
Anyways, Adams is way more consistent and has a far superior filmography. But, even as I adore her turns in Arrival, Junebug and The Master, I don't think I love anything Adams has done as much as I love Witherspoon in Election, Big Little Lies and Wild. Maybe Sharp Objects will change my mind about that tomorrow, but as of today, I choose to ignore Witherspoon's lower lows and I'll go with her.

Adams overall, but I think Reese in Wild is the best either of them has offered up. They're both fantastic.

I guess Adams because she's been consistently strong since 2005 and is riding a wave of success at the moment. That being said, Adams has yet to eclipse Witherspoon's work in Wild.

Adams, easily. Greater body of work, more consistent, and higher highs (Junebug and The Master > Election and Wild).

Adams has been better than Witherspoon, but she's also been much, much worse. I disagree. Haven't laughed at a terribly delivered line of dialogue so hard since Wahlberg's "What, no!" from The Happening.

The entirety of American Hustle invalidates your disagreement. Rendition and Devil's Knot invalidate yours. Nah, I can ignore those two movies (and I don't really think she was all that bad in Devil's Knot; just unmemorable). But American Hustle made me actively hate everyone involved while watching it, and to this day, most of them still haven't shed the stink of O. Russell.

Witherspoon was very good in Election and Walk the Line, but AA is so much better and more consistent. I also think The Master and Doubt are higher highs for her.

The entirety of American Hustle invalidates your disagreement. O. Russell's fault. He was abusive to her.

I didn't expect this question to give me as much pause as it did... I ultimately picked Witherspoon. Junebug is the best performance between them, but Witherspoon has shown more versatility and intelligence in her acting.

Reese by far.
Amy Adams has been good/greatish many times but lacks a certain individuality for me.
Reese is legendary in Election, Legally Blonde, and Big Little Lies. And just much more watchable for me too...
